History:

Not much of Jiki's history from before he joined Circus is known. He had to go through an examination to get into Circus, which is an international defense organization that tracks down wanted criminals, and was assigned to the First Ship. He works directly under Captain Tsukitachi along with his colleague Kiichi. As a Circus member, Jiki is also required to perform in the shows that they put on. His first canon appearance has him performing in a play with Tsukumo. He ends up dealing with a renegade bunny from his ship and gets beaten up by Iva (another Circus member) as penance for endangering Tsukumo.

Later, he and Kiichi are assigned to look after Gareki and Nai after Tsukumo disappears and Yogi becomes incapacitated. They take the both of them to the First Ship where Kiichi assigns Gareki and Nai to do the cleaning. Jiki tells them that they're allowed to refuse, but Gareki decides to clean anyway. While Kiichi orders them around, Jiki begins to research Gareki's background, realizing that there are connections between Gareki's background and Circus.

During dinner, captain Tsukitachi ends up inviting both Nai and Gareki to a Circus mission, which Jiki protests to. After, he offers to spar with Gareki. He easily defeats him and leaves him with the advice that Gareki should leave Circus and go back home. This encounter leaves an impression on Nai, who soon becomes terrified of Jiki.

The Circus mission takes place in Vinto, the Engraved Lakes, where there are rumors of poaching and other problems. While Gareki is left with Captain Tsukitachi, Jiki takes the opportunity to partner with Nai (much to Nai's horror) and Kiichi. With Nai's help, Jiki discovers a severed human arm and decides to patrol the area by himself. He returns with an armful of flowers and suspicions that one of the animal researchers are behind the corpses. It turns out that one of the researchers is the culprit and that he had been feeding one of the animals drugs in order to save its life from the poachers. The animal eventually dies from the strain and the researcher is arrested. After the mission is completed, Jiki is assigned to the Second Ship where he is instructed to help out with the crew (once again much to Nai's horror). He attends a welcome party only to insulted by Iva and annoyed by Gareki.

Yogi invites Jiki to a shopping trip in Vantnam, but Jiki separates from the rest of the group in order to shop by himself (and thus misses most of that arc welp). He, along with Hirato and Iva, infiltrates a company suspected to be working with Kafka (an organization that deals with illegal human experimentation) though most of it happens off-screen. Later, due to Nai's request, the First and Second Ship assemble in order to rescue Karoku from Parunedo's estate. Jiki once again partners up with Nai on the mission, acting as his escort in order to protect him from Kafka's monsters. He makes an opportunity for Yogi to flee with Nai and Gareki, and watches as Nai and Gareki disappear for a time and return with a heavily injured Karoku. The mission ends up being partly successful, and Jiki encourages Nai to watch over the injured Karoku.

When Nai disappears with Karoku from the ship, Jiki is seen trying to find him, along with Yogi and Tsukumo.

Appearance: At a height of 176 cm (or 5'7'' feet), Jiki possesses good posture and bearing, probably due to his acrobatic experience. His hair, while originally gray, is dyed black and kept short. He has golden eyes and sometimes wears glasses, not because of eyesight deficiency, but because they're very sensitive to sunlight.

Personality:

Initial impressions would describe Jiki as being fairly polite, social, and unobtrusive. He's not as feisty or aggressive as his ship-mate Kiichi, and certainly not as cheerful or irresponsible as his captain. He balances out the other two with his careful, analytical manner, but otherwise doesn't seem to be as noticeable. Later on in canon, it becomes obvious that Jiki's personality is just as complex as his fellow ship-mates.

While certainly polite when he chooses to be, Jiki's good manners is mostly a show. It's not a show to hide more devious, malicious intentions from the world around him, nor is it a front to disguise what he's truly thinking. Jiki uses kindness to his convenience. He'd much rather superficially get along with someone because it's easier. That way, he can freely receive information, prevent problems from occurring during missions, and avoid exerting energy in arguments. He's much more likely to be kind to civilians, or people who he's deemed normal, and to strangers. Unfortunately, he doesn't make too much of an effort to keep up this kindness with his fellow ship-mates or with 'weird' people. With those sorts of people, Jiki shows more of his true self.

Jiki has a tendency to accidentally (or not) say cruel things, which usually cross into being cruel and truthful. It's like he lacks tact with the people he feels he's closer to, which is a pretty natural habit for most people. Unfortunately, it makes him somewhat unlikeable, not that he actually cares. There are certain exceptions, like Tsukumo (who he's attracted to), but they're rare. Most of the time, Jiki provokes and jabs, all with an unaffected smile on his face. It's like he's not aware of the consequences behind what he's saying, but he most assuredly is. Why else would he say them? Along with being rude, Jiki has no problem with lying to others flat out especially if they're the sort that would believe him (see Nai and Yogi). He doesn't seem to be troubled by a conscience as frequently as the others are.

Also, he's not as social as he makes himself out to be. He prefers being alone and doing things alone unless it's during a mission. His hobby includes creating different medicines from plants which is why he's always on the lookout for new plant species (which ends up distracting him from the mission nine times out of ten)> He also seems to be unaffected by the idea of violence and death (like the time he was pleasantly surprised by a severed human arm), but that may be due to his Circus training and experience. While on missions, Jiki sheds his false politeness and becomes strict, controlled, and more likely to say something rude. He doesn't scare easy and has little mercy for his opponents. While not on missions, Jiki is usually indulging in his hobby of making medicines and potions from plants. He holds a very high amount of interest in botany and can get distracted during missions because of it. He likes his medicines to be helpful and efficient, but he doesn't mind leaving them bitter either.

Of course, there are times when Jiki's personality, usually calm and cruel, turn a complete 180. When in Iva's company, Jiki almost always ends up losing his temper. He allows himself to get worked up and openly shows his dislike for his fellow Circus colleague. (It also doesn't help that Iva's usually beating him up over something too). In contrast, he seems to be extra social with Tsukumo (thanks to ulterior motives). And while he's partially condescending to Kiichi and Yogi (as well as Gareki), he holds particular interest in Nai and is not wholly unaffected by his MOE earnest and honest nature. He's usually really just a jerk though.

Abilities:

>> Jiki is in top physical shape, having trained as both as a fighter and an acrobat for Circus. He has far superior eyesight compared to a human's and is able to see things at a far off distance quite clearly. He is also a a skilled performer.

>> He possesses a good amount of botanical knowledge and chemistry, having made medicines from plants. (I imagine most of this is useless in Holly Heights, since his canon has completely different plants and animals).

>> His Circus ID allows him to fly and summon his weapon, a whip, which he is skilled at using. He also has some kind of insect-related power, which canon really doesn't describe at all.

SAMPLES
First Person:

Good afternoon. While this is certainly a charming idea, I can't see how I fit in the scheme of things. I don't particularly like disappointing someone I just met, but I assure you that it's all me. I'm a terrible fit for the domestic life, nor do I have the patience to work at it. A shame, really. I know of a few people back home who would enjoy this. [spoiler: no one] Perhaps you could ask them instead! [LIKE IVA]

But I suppose if the landlord really cared about what I wanted, then I wouldn't be here in the first place. So! I'd like to ask you, the populace, instead. What is it about this town that you like the most?

Third Person:

The leaves of his favorite daffodil plant were wilting.

Which was completely ridiculous, considering the amount of care Jiki had put into the plant since he had first purchased it. He had been meticulous in his care for his plants back on the ship and he hadn't done anything different for the ones in Holly Heights. Perhaps it was the climate -- no, the weather was usually mild -- then, perhaps the composition of the soil? But he had tested it before, and found it quite similar to soil back home.

Then what was it? He propped the plant back on the window sill, pulling the blinds a bit higher, and frowned. He rarely found himself stumped by a botanical problem, and when he was, he usually enjoyed the challenge. Now, all he could feel was a strong current of frustration. He turned from the window and picked up his Gardening Today magazine. The prospect of a new world had daunted him at first, until he discovered the amount of plants he had never seen or touched which was definitely enough to distract him. That had always been his flaw, according to Kiichi at least, being distracted by the fauna from the situation at hand. Sure, he was kidnapped and stripped of all of his abilities and left bereft of communication or clues. Still, Jiki liked to think of himself as practical. The situation at hand wasn't one he could easily solve in an afternoon. It didn't make sense to ignore other pursuits, especially one as important as botany.

That had been his reasoning a month ago. Now, he wondered if he had made the right choice. If he was perfectly honest with himself, then he'd admit that it was less the possibility of being trapped forever, and more the frustration at starting out all over again. The last time he had been to the store the attendants had laughed at him. It was embarrassing being so utterly clueless about the species here, especially after having been so capable back home --

No! That wasn't why he was upset. Of course not. He was just frustrated that despite months, he still wasn't any closer to finding a way out. Yes, of course. He wasn't that petty after all.

Jiki coughed, returned to his daffodil, and moved it a little more to the right. It was strange to see it wilting. Perhaps the plants here were a lot less resilient. Perhaps there was something in the house. He'd find out at the store tomorrow, yes. He wasn't ignoring his other problems, he was prioritizing. And it wasn't because he was annoyed at not knowing everything about plants either. He just had a great deal of interest in botany.
