IC INFORMATION
Characters Name: Armin Arlert
Age: 15
Canon: Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan
Canon Point: End of Episode 25/Chapter 34: after Annie is captured but before the breach in the wall is discovered.
Species: Human
Gender: Male/Male
Orientation: No canon evidence either way. With Armin’s situation it’s not that unsurprising that he’d have little time for romance anyway, and he’s both mature for his age and underdeveloped so unlikely to be driven by hormones.

History: http://shingekinokyojin.wikia.com/wiki/Armin_Arlert
Appearance:

Armin is small for his age, and has a baby face. He has blonde hair, cut into a bob, and blue eyes.

Personality: Seemingly fitting with his underdeveloped body, Armin is quiet at first glance, a much more quiet and gentle presence than his two friends. In better times he would have been much more suited for life as an academic. He loves books and knowledge, throwing himself at any glimpse of the world outside of the walls even though that knowledge is illegal. It’s his desire to go and see the world that drives Eren when they’re children. He’s calm and sensible, even in difficult situations, which is part of what makes him such a good tactician. The only time he really gets caught up is when his friends are in danger, which is understandable given how much he relies on them. He’s kind hearted, and surprisingly gentle for a solider. He’s a lot warmer with strangers than the other two, and gets on well with the majority of the other trainees. More than that, he genuinely cares for people and animals, and he wants to protect them. He’s also respectful towards their commanders and elders, which serves him well, helping him to be taken more seriously with the plots that he comes up with. Armin has an acute eye for attention to detail, noticing things that most people won’t even register, and an even better memory for the small details. He can piece things together like a jigsaw, realising what’s happening well before any of his peers, and working out the best response almost seamlessly.

For a long time, Armin was crippled by his lack of belief in himself. It’s easy to see where it came from. When he was a child he was bullied and had to rely on Mikasa and Eren to save him: he wasn’t strong enough (or willing to, bearing in mind that this was before the fall of the wall and before he’d been exposed to the violence of the titans) to fight back, and when he came up with smart remarks it just made the bullies more angry. During the three years of training, Armin was surrounded by people stronger and more able to fight than him, not to mention more physically developed. Although he tried his hardest, that was only enough for him to keep up with them, and never to out rank them. It was Eren who gave him back his self belief, by leaving his fate in Eren’s hands when the military were planning on killing him after his first transformation as a titan. This is when we first get to see Armin’s abilities to strategise, but his suggestions are timid, offers of help. Later on, when they’re planning to trap Annie, he’s much more firm in his determination, and there’s clear character development there. Armin now has the belief in himself to trust his own ideas, and is no longer afraid to put forward his suggestions towards a solution. However, even when he was suffering from lack of self belief he was still determined not to let his friends down and that kept him going and allowed him to keep up with his peers.

Armin’s world is not an ideal one, and he’s seen things that no 15 year old should see. While he might appear to be adjusted, there’s a hidden cruelty to him. He’s not afraid to come up with schemes against the people that he once fought along side, or ones that involve putting himself and others in danger. When he thinks that Eren’s been killed he completely shuts down, not moving or seeing anything for at least a couple of minutes, putting himself in danger and not snapping out of it until he’s physically pulled away. Later on when the female titan kills those in the scouting legion he’s been riding with and his horse he breaks down again, but this time he explodes in rage, shouting out. However, unlike many of his friends there’s little violence in his actions, only in his words, and he returns to normal fairly quickly.

Eren and Mikasa have been Armin’s world for a long time and he’s utterly devoted to both of them. Before the wall fell they were close friends, and Armin’s always had to rely on them for protection, but afterwards they all had to rely on each other for survival. With the death of Armin’s grandfather the three of them had no adult to look after them and must have had to look after each other in that year before they became trainees. Once they joined, Armin was always close to Eren’s side. He looks up to both of them and admires their strength, and in later chapters realises more that he compliments them with his own strength. His driving motivation after Eren’s ability is revealed is to protect them, and he didn’t even consider taking another position where he could use his theoretical knowledge, instead following them blindly into the scouting legions. They are the most important people in the world to him, and he doesn’t function well without them.

Abilities: Armin’s had three years military training, and although he was bottom in his class for most of it, he still passed. This includes hand to hand combat as well as sword fighting with the plug in blades that form part of their 3d manoeuvre gear. Guns are also shown to be used, and though Armin is only briefly shown with one it’s safe to assume that he knows how to use and take care of one. Of course, he’s also proficient in using the 3d manoeuvre gear, which is a system of harness and hardened wires that will carry a man’s weight, allowing him to ‘fly’. Controlling it involves a lot of lower body strength, and Armin passed his training so he is at least proficient with it. Given his size it’s probably one part of training that he’s better at.

More notably, he’s a genius when it comes to intuition and tactics, and his plans are taken seriously by men much older and more experienced than him. He notices things that no one else does, and even under stressful situations can tie the loose ends together to come up with an answer or an idea.

SAMPLES
First Person:

[There’s just too information to take in, which is why Armin would rather take a while to process it all and explore before he starts to try and deal with the new technology. But there’s something more important to deal with, and that means dealing with the phone. He’s had it explained to him, but that doesn’t make it any easier. And doesn’t save him from shouting into it. He hasn’t realised that he has it on webcam yet. Fortunately even shouting his voice isn’t too loud.]

I’m looking for my friends and I was told this is the quickest way to see if they’re here! [They probably meant to look at the names saved on it, but Armin didn’t know about that.] I’m looking for Eren and Mikasa, I need to know that they’re all right! Eren’s taller than I am – that is to say that he’s about average height – and he gets angry easily and he’s got short brown hair! And Mikasa has black hair and she’s really pretty and doesn’t usually show her emotions. Eren’s hurt so I need to know that he’s all right. [Even though he heals fast now, Armin can’t shake his worry.]

And if there’s anyone else from home here too, it’s me, Armin! I hope everyone’s all right. I know everything seems to be safe here, but… [He can’t shake the feeling that something’s off. Being kidnapped and taken to a strange place will do that, as will five years of war and fighting.] I’m all right. [He adds, belatedly.

He fiddles around for a little bit longer, not really sure what he should say to end things. Then a second thought occurs to him.
] Ah, and if anyone has anything that they can tell me about this place I’d like to hear that too. I’ve read what I was given and my new… family told me some things, but I’d like to hear more about his place works. Who’s in charge? How do people get here? Are we all taken from other places or are there some people who were here before and what do they think of us? That sort of thing. Thank you. [And then after some fumbling he does turn the thing off. Don’t expect prompt replies from him as he tries to work it out.]

Third Person: Two musebox posts, one’s au and a tad short at the moment, one’s canon but written in brackets (it’s action based). Hope that’s okay.

Brackets (gets porny towards the end)
