[ The audio feed flickers to life; anxious muttering can be heard if one concentrates hard enough. After a few moments of ostensible silence, a timid, shaky voice comes through. ]
...H-Hello? Is anyone there?
I’m sorry to disturb you if you are, but I’m afraid I’m new here...and I don’t believe I know anyone here. I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Alita Tiala.
[ She pauses, her voice nasal and unclear. She sniffles and continues. ]
I just wanted to know if we’re really stuck here for good. Can we not see our friends? Our families? What will I do...they’ll think I’m dead…! How can I let them know that I’m all right?
Oh, I just don’t know what to do…
[ And with that trailing utterance, she switches the device off, satisfied that she’s given a sufficiently innocuous impression. Time to see what kind of people come out of the woodworks now. ]
Third Person:
The situation is so perfect, so coincidental, that Alita can’t help but be distrustful of it.
It’s too good to be true. Whisked away from prison only to be set up in a quiet suburban household, where no one knows who she is or what she’s done? That had been the stuff of her dreams after she had been incarcerated, and to have it handed to her on a silver platter with no catch is simply too fantastic to be real.
Nevertheless, she may as well play it safe. Don the persona again. Get a feel for the people here. See who’s in charge. She’s anonymous here; the act hasn’t been ruined for her. The show can go on.
She won’t make the same clumsy mistakes again.
Alita gazes around her new house -- it’ll do for now, but she can already feel the desire for an upgrade. She apparently has a “family” now, but the house is as quiet as anything. Perhaps this is the best time to test the waters.
She wanders over to the window, gazing outside at this quiet little pocket of reality, fiddling with the device given to what she assumes is all of Holly Heights’ residents.
A small, confident smile graces her face.
Oh, yes, she’ll definitely find what she had been looking for here.
