Appearance:

Personality: As the main character, Sena has the most development in the whole manga regarding his personality while remaining true to his basis. Shy and soft-spoken, Sena used to be bullied ever since kindergarten due his weak personality which caused him to grow dependent of his friend Mamori as she was the one that protected him and didn't bully or ignore him. Ironically this dependence only made him appear as weaker and cause him more problems as he grew up to the point that everyone, Mamori included, ended assuming that he was the weakest and most useless guy in the world, someone who was completely unable to do things on his own. For years Sena lived a weak and easy life, always being bullied, always depending on Mamori for everything, always doubting himself and his own capacities. Out of every character in the manga, Sena is probably the one who has the worst opinion on himself, even near the end of the manga, he still lacks to show proper confidence, tending to end any confident statement with a string of hesitant comments despite the open respect and awe other players show to him. A good proof of how bad Sena's opinion of himself is regarding strength and capacities, is the fact that despite being taught how to run by Riku so he wasn't bullied, Sena used that skill to run errands for the bullies and avoid being hit as he was sure that even with that running technique he would still be caught and hit. Another example lays in the scene when Kurita tells Sena about American Football and shows him a game, despite his speed Sena doesn't think even for a moment that he could outrun anyone and avoid most of the harm. Instead he sets his sights and goals in the piper dream of becoming the team's manager, someone able to help the team, but with little relevance and expectations for himself (this goal is probably influenced by his own father, a good man with no ambition other than to do a good job).

Of course, by near the end of the manga and the canon point he's being picked up from, Sena's not entirely like that anymore. While he still shows a lack of confidence or a confidence that is shattered at the minimum external stimulus (just being tackled by Panther once was enough to send him into a spiral of "it's impossible"s and "I can't do it"s for a good part of the game), he's not as weak willed and coward as he initially was. Neither is he as "lost in life" as he was at the start when he had no idea of what he wanted to do in the immediate future, with no real interests other than to not been hurt much and with no friends besides Mamori on his cellphone book.

Right after meeting Kurita, Sena already began to snap out of that cocoon that formed around him during years. When he heard Juumonji and his friends planning to ruin the American Football club by using Sena, for probably the first time in his life, Sena actually refused to obey and cooperate with them, raising his voice and closing his fists in anger. And when they took his cellphone and talked about sending a message to Mamori, Sena fought to get it back... Granted, it was not much of a fight, but he tackled Juumonji and bit his hand to get the cellphone back before he ran away, finally using the running technique that Riku taught him for the purposes it was meant to. This event marked the turning point for Sena, not only it served for Hiruma to discover his talent and thus the start of his career as an American Football player, but it also settled the fact that, no matter how weak Sena may be and how badly beaten he may end, for his friends he will fight back and do what he can to protect them.

At many times during the manga, it's Sena's determination to help Hiruma's and Kurita's dream of reaching the Christmas Bowl what drives him to fight and play even against opponents that scare him shitless. If it was just for himself, he would have probably given up soon after the start, assuming he even got started in. But since it was the last chance Hiruma and Kurita had to reach their dream, Sena fought and his fighting spirit and anger often got feed on people belittling their dream or saying (ignorantly most of the time as Deimon's rule of not allowing third years extracurricular activities isn't well known) that they could have more chances the following year. While it's true that Sena makes many turning point decisions alongside the manga (refusing Mamori's help after his first match because he wanted to stay in the team, starting to train alone even under a heavy rain after his first defeat against Shin, deciding to stay and train in the Death March in America) and that those decisions come in part from his own wishes and goals, ultimately Sena was mostly driven by his wish of helping Kurita and Hiruma.

By the time the dream of reaching and winning the Christmas Bowl becomes a reality, Sena has grown and matured far beyond that. It's during a visit to the temple on New Year (less than a full year since the start of the manga) that Sena makes what would be the last turning point decision regarding American Football and this time, unlike the others, it's a decision no one actually asks him to do. There's no Mamori telling him to leave the team, no Hiruma suddenly revealing that there was another tournament and thus another chance, no Dobukuro asking him if he was willing to go to hell in order to improve. Sena makes a decision simply because of a chance meeting with Takami and Ootawara from the Oujou's Knights, and that decision is simply to keep playing American Football even after he graduates and becomes an adult and finds a job. Not because of someone else's dream, or because of a special dream of his own, just because he wants to keep playing and hopes to have more matches against previous opponents in the future. By the end of the manga this decision morphs into Sena's dream of becoming a professional player in the NFL despite all the odds against him being able to do so, though by that point that transformation isn't of big relevance as he was already settled on playing forever no matter how scary the game is at times (and even at the end of the manga he still shows fear about it even when he's diving head first into it).

As the manga goes on, Sena grows both as a player and a person making his bond with American Football a strong one as it starts by being the thing that gives him a chance to be "someone different" from how he is (or rather from how he perceives himself to be) but ends just being a thing he loves the most because it gave him the chance to grow up and become stronger. It's worth to note, though, that Sena's growth, while heavily influenced by American Football isn't just some magic work caused by the game or by the Eyeshield 21 persona he's forced to adopt during the games at the start of the story. It can be argued that Sena is someone easily influenced by others, and it's true, within a reason. Sena is never influenced into doing something he absolutely rejects, he even considered (very briefly, until Kurita actually showed him how the games were) the idea of playing American Football before Hiruma forced him to. And even after he was forced to, the next time, Sena considers running away but ends changing back into his player clothes even before Hiruma sends Cerberus to capture him. Deep down, Sena has always had the potential to be the way he ends being, someone confident (even if prone to self-doubt), determined (even if still easily scared) and strong who runs towards his future head first even when part of him wants to run away, certainly it's not a usual type of strength but several characters come to acknowledge that trait of Sena as a sign of strength. At one point of the series, Hiruma states that Sena is the type of person that says that he definitively can't do something right before he actually does it or finds a way around it that allows him to win.

However, no matter how much Sena grows as a person, he's still Sena. On first meetings, it's unlikely anyone will see in him anything beyond a very polite and formal boy, somewhat timid and with self-doubt issues, a boy unable to say "no" when people ask him to do something. And that's true, in part, specially out of the field. But both on the field and outside it, Sena's more than what meets the eye. Strong enough to get the attention, awe and respect from players whom he considers much more talented and who have been playing for much longer than he has, who train harder than him, who are naturally more gifted than him. But no matter how many awesome players actually respect him and consider him a worthy rival, Sena still considers them better, respects them in the way an amateur newbie respects a pro, and never assumes he's going to be able to win against them even if he has won once before.

Sena is also quite naive, even when asked to gather an All-Stars team for the World Youth Competition, he still is saddened at how not everyone can join the team and go to play even when he knows that they just don't have enough level for it. He's easily fooled and dragged into dangerous situations and he tries to get along with everyone, even when he's terrified of them and knows that they just aren't the type to be friendly (like when he tries to do a high-five with Agon). He worries easily and even now he still tries to be helpful to everyone and anyone, even when he's not being bullied to do it anymore.

Abilities: When talking about Sena's abilities the first thing that will always come to mind is his speed. By being capable of running a 40-yard dash in 4.2 seconds, Sena is one of the fastest American Football players in high school level reaching the NFL level according to the Hiruma. Unfortunately, and although he has improved his stamina and endurance greatly since the start of his high school life, running at such speed is a big burden on his body and it's definitively not a speed he can keep for extremely long periods of time. While not the strongest guy around, Sena's training has allowed him to be able to get a benchpress of 45kgs, nothing impressive when compared to others who reach over 100kgs, but definitively a great achievement when at the start of his high school life he was barely able to even lift the bar with no weights on it. It was thanks to this (small) power and his speed, that Sena had been able to shake off opponents during plays when they tried to tackle him by using his arm to repel them and has been able to even shove opponents stronger than him to the ground on certain occasions (Kongo Agon, during the Shinryuji Naga - Deimon Devil Bat match, is a prime example of this).

Sena also possesses great balance (even when drunk) and is very good at dodging, probably an ability developed from all his years being bullied into doing errands for others and having to run through crowds as fast as possible to avoid being punished by his bullies. Another thing worth to mention, and directly related to his dodging skills and his many years of practice as bullied errand boy, is Sena's capacity to "see" the open paths between crowds and how wide they are so he can know if he can squeeze through or not, to some extent Sena is able to guess where a path may going to be opened or closed based on the movements of the people, but that only works if those people have inferior speed to him, if they move as fast as he does or even more it's pretty much impossible for him to guess their moves which would force him to improvise.

Finally it's probably worth to mention both Sena's capacity to improvise when faced with difficulties, something that has helped him countless times since he started playing American Football. It's thanks to that that he has been able to overcome opponents like Yamato, the Original Eyeshield 21 and who was said to have a perfect capacity for defense in all the three dimensions. Combined with his capacity to improvise comes his great imagination, in fact Sena's imagination is really excessive at times (examples of this are when, before the match against Shinryuji Naga, he imagines himself defeating Agon only to be stabbed by Shin and grilled up as if he was an animal, or like when he imagines Shin training by raising an elephant, a 10 tons weight and a normal benchpress weight which probably had a crazy weight as well, all with just one finger). Despite the excesses his imagination has at times, it has also provided him with great ideas for new plays and with resolved conviction to keep trying on things and aiming to get stronger.

Other: Position: Running back / Free Safety
Jersey Number: 21
40 yard dash: 4.2/4.1 seconds (the official is 4.2, he's never really timed as 4.1 but there have been times when he has actually managed to go a bit faster than 4.2 so it's safe to assume that he can achieve that speed, just not usually).
Bench Press: 45 kg
Weight: 48 kg (106 lb)
Height: 155 cm (5' 1")

SAMPLES
First Person: [A boy fumbles with the cellphone, hesitant between trying to make it work or leave it alone. Even when he seems to decide to make it work and activates the camera his face shows nothing but hesitation, confusion and a bit of fear, wide brown eyes staring at the object as if expecting it to explode or something.]

U-Uhm... Hi-Hiruma-san? W-What is the meaning of this? Is it some punishment game or training? Eh...

[The shaking voice that tried to speak loudly falls into a mumbled tone as he seems to argue with himself.]

Wait... Is it really okay for me to use this? Maybe I'm not supposed to use it yet. But then how am i going to know what to do? No, no, this must be okay, if I'm supposed to use it and I don't call him he's going to kill me... But if I'm not supposed to he's going to kill me either way!

[A small whine, similar in sound to "hieeee" escapes his lips as he shrinks on himself as if trying to hide his head in his body like turtles do. So far, in all his monologue, the boy has made clear a few things: that he's scared and confused, that he can't make up his mind and that he's looking for someone named Hiruma who may or may not be a killer since his tone doesn't imply a joke at the mention of this person killing him, he actually sounds pretty sure of it.

Sena spends another minute arguing with himself, this time mentally and thus the feed is only gifted with the "wide" array of expressions he makes as he does so, expressions which range from being scared to being terrified.]

Okay, if... If I'm not supposed to use this yet, or if this belongs to someone else, I'm sorry for using it without permission. That should be good, right? R-Right. B-But I'm really kind of lost, maybe, and I would like to know what I'm supposed to do here. And why I'm here. And how to get out of here, t-this place is a bit...

[Creepy, unnerving, the way the houses are all the same way, the way the gardens are kept the same way. But saying that out loud probably isn't a good idea, not when he's not even sure who's listening or who's responsible for this. His mind clings to the idea that this is something Hiruma has done, because he could be able to do so and then, even if scary, it would still have an objective, and even the fact that it's so creepy would have a meaning as it would have been done on purpose.]

I-I just want to go home, or to the hotel? Actually I'm not very sure where I should be.

[He remembers the overtime against America, but nothing else, did they go to the hotel? Did they even finish it? He can't remember, it's as if he was pulled right from the middle of it, but that's impossible.]

Third Person: In all honesty, the whole thing unnerved Sena more than he would have liked it to do. From an objective point of view, the urbanization was nothing but a normal, apparently peaceful one. Sure, the houses were all the same. And the lawns were kept the same way. And the decorations were the same. And the cars were the same model and color, which was something he had never seen before, sure it wasn't impossible to spot a few same models here and there on the streets, but not so many and while being surrounded by a universe of uniformity. If anything the place was a bit creepy, in the way that it gave the feeling that there was no individuality in the urbanization, but it wasn't as if that was a bad thing either, it was definitively better than a chaotic place full of anarchy.

But, subjectively, something just didn't click well with Sena. He could feel it, the Devil Bat's mascot clawing at his head from behind and screaming at him for being so blind to see the danger that was right around the corner. It was as if a sixth sense was telling him that something bad, terrible was about to happen. And no matter how much he tried to convince himself that it couldn't be that bad, the Devil Bat was still clawing at him and screaming in his ear making everything even more scary than it was already.

The boy looked around once more, having lost count of how many times he had done so in hopes to see a familiar face, but it was impossible. No one seemed to be around and that only made things worse. Sure, it wasn't the first time he had basically woke up suddenly to find himself in a place he didn't know, and it wasn't beyond Hiruma to practically kidnap them all and throw them to the other side of the planet in order to train. But normally, the demonic quarterback tended to be around when that happened. Leaving him all alone and with no instructions at all didn't seem to fit Hiruma's methods as far as he had seen. But who else could do such a thing?

"... I don't think I'm going to figure out what happened by just standing here and wondering about it, huh? Maybe I should..." Look out for help? Was he in a position that required help even? Look out for instructions? That seemed more like it, but where to start? Maybe he should try to think of what his teammates would do in those circumstances in order to get an idea... He could always go around the urbanization in a jog, combining the search with training in case this whole thing was another bizarre training session, that would be something Shin would do, right? Or maybe he could try to knock at the doors and ask the people living there as if he was just a normal tourist who had got a bit lost, full of confidence and with a pleasant and charming smile on his face. Somehow he could see Yamato having no problem with that method. Both were good ideas, but none were really his style, what if he went to jog, but he was supposed to stay where he was? What if he tried to ask around, but wasn't supposed to do so?

It just didn't make sense, this all had to be Hiruma's doing. It had to, because thinking of any alternative to that was just too scary for Sena. But Hiruma wouldn't do something like this without at least giving him a hint of what to do. Sure, he had a cellphone with more contacts he could have ever dreamed of having (and, sure enough, Hiruma's name was there, which solidified the idea of this being his doing, but there's no way he was going to call his captain right off the bat unless he was sure he wouldn't get killed for it). And sure, he had a bunch of keys, one of them had a number attached to it, but what was he supposed to do with all that?

'How about you get started by opening the door of the house with the same number as your key, fucking midget?'. The Devil Bat behind him had decided to give the screaming a rest and sit on the chair where Sena had woken up, smoking a cigar and looking at him as if he was an idiot. And he certainly felt like an idiot for not realizing it sooner, the way things were that key had all the chances of being the hint Hiruma had left him, but he couldn't figure it out until his imagination decided to make him hallucinate again with a giant Devil Bat, it had been a while since that happened. The cigar had also been a new addition.

Still, even as he approached the door of the house and put the key in it, the previous feeling of being about to face his own demise kept nagging him. Sena opened the door slowly and hesitantly, calling out in hopes to find anyone who could help him inside, "E-Excuse me? S-Sorry to intrude but I had the key for this house for some reason!" He just couldn't enter without apologizing for intruding, key in his hand or not, the house was definitively not his so it was only appropriate for him to do so.
