IC INFORMATION Characters Name: Canada (alias: Matthew Williams) Age: Formally 145 (Birthday: July 1, 1867; has been around for over 300 years) He looks to be 23. Canon:Axis Powers Hetalia Canon Point: Present day, 2013 Species: Country Gender: Mentally and physically male Orientation: Straight Canada has not been in a situation where he's had to consider marrying another country, or having to have those kinds of relations for political reasons. He's quite familiar with the idea of same-sex relationships (one of his fathers is France, after all) and is open-minded, but he himself is more of a traditionalist and prefers women.
History: A long time ago, Canada was an adventurous child. Tirelessly he would explore the wilds of the land about him, relishing in their bounty and beauty. Even then he was known for his kindness, quietness and hospitality. France and England were the two people most involved in his development at that time, fueling Canada's growth through colonization and trade. England eventually took possession of young Canada and introduced him to America, who grew bored of Canada just moments after meeting him. (Their relationship has been something like that ever since.)
The rivalry between France and England continued in the new world and revolution brewed not only in what was to become America, but cast a pallor of discontent upon Canada as well. The two young countries grew up very quickly, but in different ways. Where America fought a war to win his independence, Canada sought to peaceably settle his way through it.
After many years Canada finally came into his own as a country, albeit still under England's dominion. But Canada didn't mind it very much at all, and for a very long time thought of himself as primarily British. This was much to France's disappointment, but Canada still retains lots of French heritage and language. (And he inherited his silky hair, which helps France be one of the few that actually can recognize Canada.) To this day the tension between the English and French gives Canada angst in the form of Quebec versus 'everyone else'.
Finally Canada decided to start asserting himself as uniquely Canadian, but perhaps it was too late. All of the other nations forget about him easily and rarely notice him when he's in the room. When some do notice him, it's often because of a grudge that they are holding against America. When Canada can finally get the other person to realize that he's not America, Canada is very forgiving, except to promise himself that he'll tell his grievance to America next time... He rather resents taking the beats for his brother's carrying a big stick and antagonizing others so easily.
Nowadays he's been proud to be more prominent – ranking high in some world-wide surveys, hosting the last winter Olympics (which went rather well for him if he does say so himself), and generally being more present on the world stage. Whether or not the others notice these accomplishments, well, that's up to them.
Appearance: Canada is of a fairly average build and height at 177cm (or 5'9”) like his brother. Not having the strength of him, however, Canada's build is more slender. His hair is dark blond and the bangs are long, parted down the middle to either side of his face. One long and distinctive lock of hair curls out in the front. He has dark blue eyes and wears thin wire glasses. He always speaks in a soft, hushed tone, even when yelling.
In present day he likes to wear hoodies and jeans or a white dress shirt. In an attempt to assert his identity as Canada, his clothing sometimes sports the maple leaf. In meetings he wears a suit with a red tie. Image
Personality: Canada is a very timid and sensitive guy. He dislikes fighting and has trouble asserting himself. These are double-edged traits. On one hand, the other nations find him kind and quite agreeable to deal with. On the other, the others will often forget he's even there to be dealt with. An encounter with England show this, in that while England had to be prompted by France to remember Canada's name, England was extremely apologetic and contrite to his 'dear boy' once he realized his mistake. Despite this, even after all this time, Canada is quite loyal to England. Another consequence of his going unnoticed is that he patently and optimistically waits his turn to be called upon in meetings... however his patience is never rewarded and he is never called on.
Canada's patience is thankfully vast, but not limitless. This is best shown in his dealings with America. His brother is his neighbor and Canada tries very hard to get along with him. There are good times that happen, like getting advice or playing catch together. It just doesn't help that America can be thoughtlessly aggressive, brandishing a chainsaw or repeatedly hitting him with a baseball instead of going more slowly and letting him catch it... Canada has been shown to finally snap at his brash brother and beat up on him, albeit weakly. On one level Canada is happy to have this kind of relationship, but sometimes it gets to be just too much and he gets serious about reaming America out.
Canada is known as one of the world's leisure spots, which is reflected in his laid-back and relaxed personality. In most situations Canada is very agreeable, going with the flow easily – particularly if the flow is directed by someone he's either wary or respectful of.
An unfortunate habit of his is to sleep in, to the extent that he has been late for important world meetings. He also tends to lose himself gazing at cute things, such as his polar bear Kumajirou's eyelashes... as in, he will lose his whole weekend this way. (So much for the house chores, but it was a nice way to spend the time.) He's also prone to say 'sorry' for just about anything.
Generally with Canada, what you see is pretty much what you get- he's not very good at lying or deception. However, there are a few deeper layers to him.
Underneath the soft and kind exterior is a long-suffering passive-aggressive. He often shows spurts of resolve, for example to tell America off or to get England to properly recognize him. He almost never quite gets up the will to say those things loudly, but being honest he does speak his mind often. He'll whisper tell America what's troubling him, but of course he's not listening. He'll tell Cuba to lay off because he's not America, but he can't get past his anger. So in the end he puts up with all sorts of indignities, but in his own small ways gets something in return from them later. This usually comes in the form of Canada getting generous gifts from the offending country, such as Cuba inviting Canada to vacation with him. A little-shown trait of Canada's is that he's a wily tactician. While England and America were at war America ignored any letters from the other nation. Canada cleverly enclosed England's message in a box saying 'food inside', thus piquing America's interest in actually receiving it.
Hidden even deeper than his passive-aggression are wells of passionate emotions. In the negative, he once made America cry by bringing up every bad thing his brother ever did over the course of three hours. (Not just anyone can make the fiery America cry.) On the other hand, he can be a very passionate lover. For all that he was young at the time, he did pick up some things from being around France. These wells are hard to get to and do not last long, but one can see interesting things from Canada once they are tapped.
Finally, he has a weakness for is a lover of maple syrup and ice cream. What a sweet guy.
Abilities: Canada is naturally very unrecognizable or unnoticeable, like a ghostly presence. When he is recognized, he is frequently mistaken for his brother America. He has a 'sixth-sense' for recognizing someone who is 'his', which is to say Canadian. Being a Country he has more strength and stamina than the average human, although not to heroic levels. (Leave the heroics to America.) He can also run very fast when late for something important.
Other: Turning completely human will undoubtedly take away the 'ghost-likeness' quality of him, but I imagine he will still be unnoticeable...
Third Person: After reading all the paperwork twice, Canada stood in the middle of the sparse living room, arms crossed as he looked around slowly, a concerned look on his face. For a place that was supposed to be the epitome of happiness, they sure knew how to give him ten different kinds of anxiety. He was a country. He could not be away from home like this! And a wife? Marriage was a serious business, with all sorts of ramifications about the economy, territory, treaties...! How could someone else possibly choose for him? Well, he reflected after a moment of thought, he supposed his wife was going to be a human, but that was horrible in another way! How could he make a pledge like that to someone he would outlive? Would he have to hide the fact the he was a country? He didn't think he'd be able to keep up that deception for long, nor would he want to.
At a slight noise from outside he jumped, turning quickly to the front door. Could it be the rest of his newly-appointed family? After a moment nothing happened, so he sighed and turned back to looking at the room.
“What am I going to do, Kumamomo?”
But his plaintive query was not answered, as the little polar bear was not with him. Another reason for unhappiness. The bear was always good to talk to. With another sigh Canada quietly paced the room, turning the situation over in his mind. After some time his steps slowed to a stop as he came to a decision: he would just have to make the best of this for now. There would be other people here, as proved by his getting a family, so allies could be made as they sought answers. He mustn't be hasty to judge the situation based on the little he knew now. At some point they would find out the how and why of all this. But, for now, there was nothing for it but to go forward as best he could, despite the trepidation he felt...
