IC INFORMATION Characters Name: Jade Harley Age: 14 Canon:MSPA: Homestuck Canon Point: December 1st, during the first year on the ship heading toward the new session. Species: Human. Gender: Female.
History: Homestuck is very long, very complicated, and very confusing. It is a webcomic that is presented in an adventure game-like format. Many of the concepts are ridiculous, as it swings between ridiculous and very serious, so please bear with me. I'm going to boil Jade's history down as much as I can to make it as simple as possible. I am going to be leaving a lot out; if you need further clarification or expansion, please ask.
"Sburb" is a video game that basically brings about the end of the world. Characters play and, if they are successful, both create a new universe out of their game session and contribute to a war happening on the dream planets that their dream selves inhabit. When players begin this game, they have no idea what is going on; usually, they are clueless as to what they are actually doing other than "playing a game." Players who play the game are usually "fated" to do so and given titles like "witch of life" or "rogue of heart" that reference the special abilities they have and the roles that they will play as they level up within the game. Players also have "dream selves" on the warring dream planets Derse and Prospit.
Jade is unusual in that, for a very long time, when she went to sleep in the "real" world, she would awake in her tower on Prospit's moon. Prospit and Derse orbit another planet called Skaia, which acts as the battlefield between Derse and Prospit. People are able to see visions of the past, present, and future in the clouds of Skaia -- for a long time, Jade seemed to have precognitive or downright psychic abilities because of the visions she would see and the knowledge of future events that she would often glean from these clouds. While her friends also had sleeping selves on the moons of Derse and Prospit, they were unaware of it.
That being said, Jade was raised by her adoptive grandfather (her ectobiological father, but that is a long, long, long story) on a remote, volcanic island until he died when she was very young. Afterwards, she was raised by her guardian and dog slash best friend Becquerel, who was as devoted to her as she was to him. Also while very young, she received a birthday present sent to herself from the future (using a stable time loop) that made very little sense to her then, but helped to lead her to befriend her best pals online: two guys and a girl named John, Dave, and Rose.
Shortly after installing and beginning to play Sburb on John's 13th birthday, meteors began to hit and destroy the Earth. As part of the game, the kids would have to prototype their "kernelsprites," which are beings that act as guides and companions through the game. The kernelsprite would take the properties of whatever it was prototyped with (for example, John prototyped his kernelsprite with his dead Nanna's ashes, and it became Nannasprite -- basically, a ghostly grandmother guide.) The foes in the game also take on characteristics of whatever is prototyped. Through a serious mishap, Jade's kernelsprite was prototyped with her guardian Becquerel, causing the foes in the game to become ridiculously strong.
A being named Jack Noir, an agent of the planet Derse, also takes on the characteristics of whatever is prototyped. When he takes on Becquerel's traits, he becomes impossibly strong -- but he also inherits a strong love and devotion to Jade.
(As a note: when John's dream self woke up, Jade saved his life by sacrificing her own. Her dream self died, though her waking self remained unharmed. Through the use of time travel, her grandfather recovered and stuffed her deceased dream body [as is the family tradition] and put it on display in one of the towers at home when Jade was very young. Seeking guidance from her "dream self," Jade also prototyped this body with her kernelsprite, resulting in a very distressed and very confused Jadesprite who had been dead for years -- and had a lot of problems keeping it together emotionally.)
Time passes, the other characters are more important for a long time, and then Jade finally gets into the game for realsies. She spends a lot of time talking to the trolls, who are aliens from the universe that actually created Earth's. She discovers that it is her role in the game as Witch of Space to "create" the next universe through a complicated frog breeding process. With the help of the trolls Kanaya and Karkat, she does ultimately breed the perfect "genesis" frog in her laboratory at home, but when she goes to the top of her tower with it, she is murdered by an exploding shaving cream bomb at the hands of another Derse agent.
Bec Noir - a villain who loves her because of the fact that her dog had been protoyped with her kernelsprite - carries her to her quest bed after she dies, triggering her transformation to godtier and fully fledged witch of space. She merges with Jadesprite, shanghais a prospit ship, makes it huge, snags John and Davesprite, shrinks the kids' planets, and zooms through the fourth wall at the speed of light, heading to the new session.
Appearance:
Personality: Sweet and energetic, Jade initially gives off an impression of extreme childishness and maybe even naivety: it's evident by her room that part of her, at heart, is an excitable thirteen year old girl. She adores Squiddles (little smiling squid dolls that come complete with built-in magnets so that when brought close enough to each other that they actively hug,), enjoys having tea parties with her Manthro Plushies (darling toy manimal chaps that are probably actively disturbing to anyone who doesn't find them adorable), and is fond of furries (though the cute, big-eyed, non-sexual variety.) Her room is a mess of her eclectic interests, with piles of Squiddles in one corner and an electric bass in the other. She enjoys old cartoons, loves animals of all kinds, and while she is a crack shot with a rifle (which will be expanded upon later), Jade is also a pacifist. Though it's not always possible, she will always do whatever she can to achieve a nonviolent means to accomplish the goals set out before her.
Jade's adoptive grandfather - and the only real parent she ever knew - was a "world-renowned explorer, naturalist, treasure hunter, archeologist, scientist, adventurer, big game hunter, and billionaire." As such, Jade has never wanted for anything: her home is enormous and filled with ancient artifacts and ridiculous gizmos suggested to have been built by her grandfather in the first place. She rarely has to take the stairs thanks to the transporter that her grandfather put on each floor of the house. I only mention this because Jade has also picked up his knack for science; she is not only an enthusiastic gardener but also has an uncanny talent for nuclear physics and general gadgetry based more on sheer intuition more than any sort of concrete knowledge. I plan on toning this down a little in Adstring, of course, just so that we don't have a thirteen year old nuclear physicist rolling in to Save the Day with Science.
Having grown up on a volcanic island with no one but her dog Becquerel (a "fucking devilbeast" as Dave puts it - Bec is actually the First Guardian of Earth, a dog-shaped creature with the power to warp space, among others) to keep her company after the death of her grandfather when she was a little girl, Jade can sometimes be a little "weird." When she connected as Dave's server player in the game that they were playing (this gave her the ability to manipulate his environment), she decided to do some housecleaning for him and his bro.. and immediately dunked a towel in the toilet and got to work. Ignoring the fact that she then uprooted the toilet and dropped it directly into Dave's bedroom, her social blunders (such as referring to her dead, taxidermied grandfather as if he were still alive) are usually mild and unoffensive.
Her sometimes easily excitable nature is reflected by the way that she types: bold green text!!! peppered with lots of exclamation points and emoticons when appropriate. Computer-based chat has been her main method of communication with her friends and the rest of humanity in general for most of her life. Due to her easygoing and generally pleasant attitude, she tends to get along easily with most people that she meets. She is strongly devoted to her friends, too; at one point, she sacrifices her dream-self (again, this will be expanded upon later) in order to save the life of John's.
This isn't to say that she is constantly chipper and cheerful; Jade can become short and frustrated with people who actively antagonize her (it took her months to forgive Karkat after he spent so long trolling her) or when she is upset (she verbally sniped at Feferi, one of the trolls, when Feferi approached her after a confusing and frightening nightmare). While Jade is arguably the most childish of the group, and certainly the most aggressively friendly one, she shows her serious and no-nonsense side more and more as the game goes on. She picks up the word "fuckass" from Karkat and does not hesitate to roll her eyes and call him out on his bullshit when he's being exasperating.
Jade's stubbornness occasionally presents as a problem for her. It took her months to forgive one of the trolls that antagonized her, despite him needing to talk to her to help her with the game. She also occasionally has issues when it comes to thinking things through; Jade spent most of her life guided by the psychic visions of the past and future that she had while she was asleep. Without those to guide her, she sometimes makes egregious blunders without fully considering what she is about to do, such as resurrecting the long-dead body of her dream self to terrible consequences.
In short, Jade is a clever, brave girl. Though a bit odd, she does not balk at her destiny (if you want to call it that) of being a player in a game that heralds the end of the world. Usually playful and amiable, she is more than capable of getting down to business and making difficult sacrifices when the situation calls for it.
Abilites: In canon, Jade can teleport, has extreme spatial awareness, grow and shrink things to an absurd degree (she carries pocket-sized planets with her!) and power a ship through space at the speed of light without breaking a sweat. On a more mundane note, she's also super knowledgeable re: the maintenance and care of firearms and is a pretty crack shot with a rifle.
Third Person: Are those cans of shaving cream? Jade wondered, puzzled as she stared up at the descending bomb moments before it detonated, and the last thing she remembered was the sound of the explosion ringing in her ears when she woke up with a gasp on the broken concrete of a street in Adstringendum. Her first thought was that she had fallen asleep again, but - no, this was different.
Her skin was still warm from the explosion of the bomb.
"Where am I? Hello?" Jade called out to no one in particular, and when no one answered, whimpered a soft, "Oh, noooo." This wasn't part of the plan. Still a little shaken up, she climbed to her feet (tripping over her dress a little in the process) and turned to survey her surroundings, still trying to process the abrupt change in scenery. Had Jack transported her? That was possible, but -- where had he transported her to? And why had her sylladex dumped everything out onto the ground around her?
It was possible that she'd fallen asleep and began sleepwalking again.. but with the destruction of Prospit and her dreamself, that shouldn't have been possible.
"Okay. Ooookay," Jade muttered to herself, before clapping her hands once. She didn't wince, even as the sound bounced sharply off the walls of the ruined city surrounding her. "Harley, this is no big deal! So maybe you're dead... but you're probably not, so let's just focus on getting out of here! Great. No big deal. Nooo big deal at all."
