Personality: As briefly mentioned before there has not, and never will be, a time to come when a label or description concerning one Orihara Izaya could accurately be applied to the males enigma of a personality.
Which, consequently, is just the way that he likes it.
Within the novel’s themselves all that is ever used to describe Izaya is that of other characer’s observances of his peculiar behavior. Thus, all we are ever given is that of what other characters presume to be the truth and so the reader is left to contemplate the validity of this truth given its source. As a result no one save Narita himself and an unknown informant named Shinichi seem to be able to shed any light upon Izaya’s true personality for even when he describes himself it can be difficult to decide if what he says is the truth or a deviation from the truth. Despite this attempts can still be made to prod into the mind of the one who adores to be looked at, a thought which enables any onlooker to quickly accept the fact (which-is-not-quite-a fact as explained) of Izaya being what one would call high maintenance. He is a man to not be messed with - as stated by his favorite employee Masaomi Kida- but even so there’s nothing Izaya enjoys any more than being adored. It doesn’t even matter which human is doing it for Izaya is one who can find (often times cruel) bliss within himself when he is being pampered, worshipped, and paraded around like the false deity he often times claims himself to be. This is further evidenced in Izaya’s ability and attempts to breed women and men into being what others would call puppets or even disciples for himself. These men and women (the most notable examples being his own twin sisters and Saki) are considered his experiments - humans bred to love and adore him – and are most often made to either accomplish different tasks for him or to see just how far humanity can be pushed.
That being said, the same high maintenance philosophy can be applied to material goods and Izaya’s odd tastes.
While it has been stated within the novel’s that the peculiar man will sometimes buy food from convenience stores he paradoxically is also known to have a fascination and craving for expensive Ootoro and some dark substance which can either be taken as tea or coffee (Hinting at his slight caffeine addiction and love for bitter foods). Being an informant for High Class Politicians and the Yakuza also implies Izaya’s knowing and practice of superior etiquette on top of his ability to shed it all when the need to draw information out of the scummy low-class humans that fill the underworld arises. He is like a snake, able to shed skins based upon who he is with and what needs to be done, in his attempts to encompass his ‘love’ in ‘all’ and ‘everything’.
Furthermore, despite his sometimes almost childish behavior, the label sociopath is one often thrown about in discussion when it comes to Izaya’s personality. However, unfortunately for us, Izaya is not so black and white. He is so conflicting in that despite there being a few times within the novels that Izaya has shown anti-social disorder tendencies there have also been other times that were directly counter to this.
He is a walking paradox who loves nothing more than to ‘nudge’ or ‘prod’ his precious humans into making decisions that may not be to their benefit. His ultimate goal in life is to merely observe all facets of human behavior and to find a way to live forever through his endeavors to reach Valhalla. Yet, despite his involvement with humanity, when it comes to the idea of friendship a person is hard pressed to claim that the informant knows anything about it from personal experience. The one person who he has ever been labeled as his friend, Shinra Kishitani, is revealed in Volume 9 as to being nothing of the sort for Izaya. They both hold onto the label of friendship between them in an effort to appease different facets of themselves (Izaya out of his curiosity for the human and Shinra because Celty told him he needed friends in middle school). And even though Izaya does tend to enjoy playing and clinging onto another male named Kyohei Kadota, Kadota would rather not have much to do with him. If anything Izaya’s ‘friendship’ with him is only another image even if beyond Kadota’s current involvement with the Dollars there is hardly anything that seems to suggest the need for this label. At least, nothing beyond another effort to taunt his favorite monster and Kadota's good friend, Shizuo Heiwajima.
The very same monster who - upon their first meeting - claimed to hate him and who has been at odds with Izaya ever since. Yet, despite their outspokenness over their relationship and where it stands, many who pay any attention to the two - such as Karisawa Erika - often times suspect that this hatred isn’t always what it seems.
After all, if Izaya Orihara hated ‘Shizu-chan’, then why would he go out of his way to make the male pay attention to him?
Abilites: Izaya Orihara has three abilities that set him even further apart from that of the human populace. The first, and surprisingly least worrisome to anyone other than one Shizuo Heiwajima, is that of his almost unnatural and uncanny skill in Parkour. The best example of Izaya’s prowess in this ability is seen most notably in the OVA episode (25) of the Anime series. Izaya can often times relocate his center of gravity at the drop of a hat giving him an edge up on anyone who would dare challenge him in a fight and it is for this reason that the informant is also able to survive Shizuo’s constant rage. A second skill that most people also need not be concerned with save for Shizuo is that of Izaya’s abilities with a flickblade. While he could most certainly handle any knife or gun he instead chose to hone his skills in the odd weapon that he keeps upon his person at all times. It is a blade so strong that it has even been able to scratch and scar the monstrous skin of his proclaimed enemy Shizu-chan.
The third and final ability that is the one everyone needs to be concerned about however is in no way physical like the precious two. This ability is that of Izaya’s manipulative nature. While most often Izaya won’t tell you to do something, if you find yourself ever at a crossroads of indecision or feeling ‘lost’ you may want to keep your distance from the sly informant. For all it ever takes is a ‘nudge’ from him to cause your life to spiral out of your control.
A maniacal gleam infiltrated brown eyes so dark they appeared almost scarlet as they gazed down upon the destruction of Tokyo, Japan. Fires were everywhere, screams and cries breaking through the silence as men, women and children ran to find some place that was safe; Some place where the gangs, the Yakuza, the Russian’s had all managed to not touch yet. But it was too late. There was no-where left to run for anyone as each were cut down in their own various ways.
A smile stretched across Orihara Izaya’s face.
“Loves! Loves! The day which we fear as our last is but the birthday of eternity! Why then run from such happiness?!”
Laughter.
As he quoted one of the many poets held within his arsenal laughter rumbled in Izaya’s chest and the raven’s arms stretched out as if to embrace the burning city. “What is there to fear in Death?!” ha…ha…..ahaha…..AHAHAHA
A head was clutched tightly in Izaya’s right hand. A brunette with a pretty face and eyes opened to watch the city burn.
“What is life, when there is no death?”
Coward.
He was a coward and a hypocrite. He fled death even as he preached others to embrace it.
Finally, Finally the world had erupted into war.
Finally, Finally the end was near.
And with that end, a new beginning.
“I will save you!”
No one paid any attention to the maniacal laughter drifting down from Tokyo’s tallest building - the Sunshine 60. No one noticed the three high-schoolers desperately trying to stop what had already begun nor did they see the headless rider and monster of a blond racing towards the building as if they too thought they could stop Izaya.
But they were all too late. There was no stopping the world from turning into a mass grave now.
And even if they reached him before he could be taken away to Valhalla the world would still burn.
And Izaya Orihara could at least still observe its crumbling.
