When France thought about death and himself visions of brimstone and traversing the great lake of fire came boldly to the forefront. The Catholic in him had assured him of it for all of his more colorful transgressions. Hail Mary could only do so much for a man as wicked and as old as he, after all. And yet, here he was a few months short of that prophetic Mayan calendar fiasco, pretty sure he wasn’t anywhere he’d ever been before.
There was no fiery lake. There were no tortured souls as far as the eye could see. No, the only unfortunate thing that registered on his mind was that it was a bright, sunny day and he had to squint because he lacked sunglasses.
He was in a lawn chair, lounging as if nothing was wrong in the world. This had not been the case when he went to ‘rejuvenate’ on that plush couch he’d had hauled into his office awhile back. So, he was either dead or dreaming.
France glanced around with a considering frown. No ladies. Not exactly owning up to the dream theory…
Quickly giving himself a onceover he affirmed that nothing was necessarily missing but he couldn’t quite shake the nagging feeling that something was horribly wrong. He was in a model backyard for starters—his backyard, though he didn’t know it yet.
Glancing at the house, he spotted the envelope and funnily, envelopes usually were the bearers of some sort of news and France was in serious need of enlightenment. What he got, however, was even odder than he’d originally thought possible.
You’ve been kidnapped but here’s some sweet perks; enjoy your stay!
Promptly followed by another mildly horrifying caveat.
“I am married?!”
Okay. In hell.
