IC INFORMATION Characters Name: Byakuya Togami Age: 16 (presumably) Canon: Dangan Ronpa Canon Point: Post-Chapter Five / Update #111 Species: Human Gender: Male Orientation: Presumably straight; we have no evidence otherwise, and there's the infamous Bad End to take into account (SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS) where the game is abandoned and he and two others have kids with Aoi. Mostly he's too busy hating everyone anyway. His standards are miles too high... and everyone else will probably be far too sane to consider him in return. Says a lot about Dangan Ronpa's cast that it contains one that isn't.
History: All members of Dangan Ronpa's cast are 'Super-High School Level 's, where Byakuya is the 'Super-High School Level Heir'. Specifically, he is the heir of the Togami family, a vastly rich and powerful conglomerate that is one of the major mover and shakers in the 'shadow world' that secretly manipulates all the world governments (yes, seriously). This is not to say Togami was simply born into the position; he has excelled in it, and takes implications that was simply 'lucky' as very severe insults*.
In any case, this position lead him to be invited into the 'Super High School' Hope's Peak Private Academy, an invitation-only school whose graduates are allegedly guaranteed success. Of course, not all is at it seems, and like 14 other would-be students, he is kidnapped by the sadistic 'Monobear' to play a cruel murder game where they are trapped in the Hope Academy building, and must kill one of their fellow students, then successfully get away with it in a School Trail to 'graduate' and leave. Being caught as the culprit results in execution. Failing to catch the culprit results in the execution of everyone else. This is the 'Despair Game' Togami finds himself in, instead of his guaranteed success in Hope's Peak Academy.
And the little shit enjoys himself. At first, anyway...
Appearance:
Personality: ...Hahahahahaha. Right.
Though Togami is entered as the Super High School Level Heir, he could be just as equally entered as the Super High School Level Jerkface. He is arrogant beyond belief, never so much as considers the possibility he might be wrong or that the game might result in his death, and has absolutely no fear nor care for those around him. When blocked by a furious Super High School Level Gang Leader with every intent of caving in his face, his response is 'Get out of my way, plankton.' When Naegi first talks to him, he spends most of the conversation ignoring him, before bluntly telling him his name, calling him an eyesore and ordering him to leave. When the others instate their own informal rules and gatherings, he completely ignores them to do his own thing. He's... just a jackass. A completely arrogant jackass.
(We are now entering SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS territory again, by the way)
When I say he's lacking in empathy, I'm really not kidding. At the second murder, he quite deliberately tampers with the crime scene to implicate Genocider Syo as the culprit after her alternate persona confesses to him in private, simply because he'd seen the real culprit leave the murder room and thought the trail would be too boring. He absolutely hates wasting time, and... well, other people are always a waste of time...
Having read various top-secret police files through his status as the Heir of the Togami clan, he fancies himself quite the detective, and whilst he often assists in the post-murder investigation (he has no belief he will deduce the the wrong culprit, but he still makes thorough investigations; Byakuya does his work, it's just he has unrealistic expectations of his end results), he often keeps cards to himself, either so he can grandly reveal them in court or to test the other would-be detectives. And then Kirigiri and Naegi upstage him anyway, but we're getting off topic.
His completely domineering and arrogant personality manages to earn him the entirely unwanted attentions of Touko, the less-murderous split personality of Genocider Syo (naturally, it would take a completely insane person to fall in love with him in the first place), something he abhors to the point of, as noted earlier, exposing her in a trial and implicating her as the culprit purely for kicks (to be fair, Touko/Syo are just as bad in their insistence of their/his 'devotion', and all the men Syo has murdered were those that Touko were infatuated with. Frankly they deserve each other). Touko has vowed - or more like 'decided' - to obey all of his whims... the first of which was to 'keep her mouth shut'. She kept this up in the face of not eating or drinking; something Byakuya completely failed to notice, care or be bothered to amend after it is pointed out (Touko survives by assuming the order only lasted a day, if you were wondering. It didn't.).
That said, Byakuya is not completely hopeless. A lot of his hostility is because he - quite openly - has every intention of winning the game for his own survival; of killing one of the students and graduating, refusing to cooperate with the others as he considers them impossible to trust and stating his reason for playing as 'because it is interesting' (he takes his victory for granted). This earns him a comment from Monobear that they are very much alike, something Togami is considerably unhappy about. His reasoning however is notably solid; they are all strangers, they do not know each other, they cannot guarantee none of them can be pushed into killing others to escape, especially when Monobear starts dropping 'motives' to encourage them; pointing out that they cannot judge the motivations of others by their own standards (ironically; see below).
Finally, after the complete rollercoaster mess of the fourth trial, he chooses to retire from the game (claiming that the remaining students are too united to kill each other so there's no point), instead choosing to focus on exposing the 'mastermind' running behind it (it should be noted Monobear is a remote controlled robot; the 'mastermind' is his operator). Doesn't stop him from using Naegi as a living bomb detector under the not-very-thick guise of 'entrusting him with tasks' afterwards though. Touko and Naegi are the main people he interacts with; Touko because he has little choice in the matter; frequently asking her, quite bluntly, to just die already; and Naegi because he solves all the mysteries in the Trials and so has a modicum of his respect (Kirigiri, the other main trial solver, he distrusts because she disappears so much). The others he largely considers worthless idiots. This... is unlikely to change in Holly Heights, though the lack of a murder game being involved will at least make him less actively hostile.
Abilites: Assuming 'Ego the size of Mars' doesn't count, Byakuya entered Hope Academy under his title as 'Super High School Level Heir'. This is not to say he simply had the good fortune to be born into his position; he has been raised and educated for it, and once made millions on the stock market in a single day (then quit out of boredom). Basically, if it does not involve athletics or actual human interaction and feelings, Byakuya excels at it. If it involves emotions and empathy, he's outright counter-productive. Whilst he often finds clues or makes intelligent logical deductions everyone short of Kirigiri miss, he completely fails to take into account the human element, believing everyone to be working under the motivation to win the game and graduate (this after beating it into everyone else's heads not to assume everyone else will think the same way they do); he utterly neglects the possibility of Sakura's death being suicide, for example. He is also the main person to spot loopholes (often intentional, for the sake of making murder easier) in Monobear's rules.
Other: We have not yet had the full details of Togami's backstory in Dangan Ronpa yet. For one thing, he must both have something Monobear could threaten him with, and some dark secret he would not want Monobear to expose, as these were two of the motives Monobear dropped on everyone (assuming they were 'joke' threats, similar to Naegi's 'wet the bed until fifth grade'). We know saying he was 'born into' his position is an extremely sore spot for him, however; whether this is because he has had to prove himself or is because of something more outlandish - like adoption or being a test-tube baby - (or just his massive ego hating the idea he didn't do anything to achieve his status) is currently unknown. It's highly, highly likely to be important in some way though; we'll see.
Personally, I hope it turns out he is literally a bastard. That would just be too perfect.
SAMPLES First Person: [the screen turns on to reveal a cold-faced boy with glasses, glaring down at the screen like it's wasting his time]
If you know who I am, contact me. That is all.
[...well that was short. The message ends immediately. He has an investigation to persue after all.]
Third Person:
Another inexplicable awakening in an unfamiliar place. Well wasn't that wonderful. He could see the sky, assuming it wasn't an illusion, but was he really free? And waking up on a lawn probably wrecked his suit. Keh.
Flipping through the documents only to discard them a few seconds later, Byakuya just sighed with even more irritation. Honestly, what was the point of all this. Was keeping everyone in one place really so terrible? He'd re-examine the paperwork for loopholes later, more important now was to find out where on the American continent - because where else could it be - he was, then leave.
Then burn Hope's Peak Academy down to the ground. Get out of that you sadistic 'mastermind'.
OTHER Housing Request?: None. I'd say 'put him in with people that would really annoy him' but that's practically guaranteed anyway. Did you read the rules and FAQ?: And found all the loopholes. Would you like your application to be unscreened?: THE TRUTH MUST BE EXPOSED.
For first person, there's an additional musebox post here that should hopefully cover everything.
For the third:
Put simply, Byakuya was bored.
It was a boring town. He lived in a boring house. He was stuck on a boring street. Certainly, the idea of kidnapping people from multiple universes was an intrieguing one, but the idea of doing it just to force them all into randomised martial "bliss"...
It was so boring it made his fists shake.
The Hope's Peak Academy game, that had been worth his time. A game of murder, secrecy and paranoia that seemed the perfect place for a man who knew how the world really worked. Of course, there'd been a few mishaps and he'd abandoned it in favour of a more interesting test of wits, but it was certainly better than this.
Oh sure, the identity of the mysterious 'Landlord' was interesting (if it was even one person to begin with; he seriously doubted it) but rattling out that kind of secret didn't seem to have a time limit. And from a precursory flicker through the logs on the shared network, practically all his fellow victims were just sitting around and accepting it.
What boring, blinkered, braindead twaddle.
Ugh. He'd probably have to go out of his way to get any interest out of this place. The Landlord's advice was so vague it was rediculous. Did they really intend to just dump them here? Was that really the whole point of it all?
He'd have to dig. Tear away all these stupid facades of normalcy. Drag as much of the truth kicking and screaming into the light as he could. How the 'Landlord' responded to that would be just as interesting as the process itself.
