IC INFORMATION Characters Name: Yuki Sanada Age: 18 at his canon point Canon: Tsuritama Canon Point: end of the animu Species: human Gender: male Orientation: Unknown (and he likely hasn't given it any thought himself due to his social phobia). Going with safely bisexual because it's been hard enough for him to make friends, let alone be interested in anyone. He does, however, grow to be very comfortable with his male friends, thus that reasoning.
Yuki has always drawn attention to himself when that's about the last thing in the world that he's wanted. Having red hair in Japan, first of all, is nothing to pass on by, and his crippling anxiety makes him do things that aren't quickly forgotten by his peers. Luckily he moves around with his grandmother so much that he doesn't often have to face the same people twice.
He has extreme social anxiety, where he's always worrying about how others see him or not being able to do something right and then being made fun of. He even has to look up the proper way to greet his new classmates in an effort not to mess up. When he's faced with a situation that makes him nervous, he freezes up and feels as though water is closing in all around him, taking away all of his breath. During this process he is also known to make terrifying "demon faces" ... which frighten away potential friends and classmates because it makes him seem very angry. He sweats profusely and most embarrassingly of all, usually ends up doing something like screaming and then running away in shame.
Because of this, and the fact that he moves so often, Yuki has never really had any friends. His closest companion and most special person is his French grandmother, Kate. While for the most part he seems content with Kate's company and cares for her very much, he is in fact a bit lonely deep down. What young boy wants to go through high school completely alone, after all. Even if he didn't have anxiety, it would probably be difficult for him to make friends. He's generally not very talkative and some of the characters in the series wonder if he even talks at all when they meet him for the first time. He also gets the nickname of "stonefish" because of how expressionless and quiet he is except when he makes his one terrifying face.
Actually, Yuki is a very nice boy. His quietness is merely a defense mechanism, because he doesn't want to mess up, and he's never had many people to talk to in the first place. The few people that he becomes close to, however, he loves very much and would do anything for. He cares so much for the people he loves that when something goes wrong, he's sometimes not able to do anything else. When Kate goes to the hospital for an extended stay, he spends days being unable to do anything but lay around.
When he needs to think things over, he prefers to go off and be by himself. He usually goes to his room and lays down for a while, thinking over the things bothering him as if they're movie reels going through his mind. Kate often tells Haru to leave Yuki alone when something is bothering him, because he'll come back and talk again when he's ready to. He doesn't like to be pressured when he's feeling bad and prefers to take things at his on pace. On that note, he doesn't like to be called useless or anything similar, and will work hard to prove himself of worth to people that he either respects or admires.
Two things that Yuki most assuredly loves outside of his grandmother are the ocean, and the internet. Moving to Enoshima is probably his favorite destination to date because it's right on the ocean. As soon as they arrive, he's ecstatic and happy to call the place his home. The ocean seems to calm him down and make him happy even if when he's actually at sea, he's very unstable — at first! He later gets his sea-legs and loves it. In Japan, the internet is popularly used through cellphones. Yuki wouldn't be caught dead without his, as he uses it to look up basically anything he doesn't know or is uncertain of. Some things he's searched include anything from fishing terms to friendship.
Yuki may be extremely awkward, make funny faces, and spend a good chunk of his day thinking about how not to be embarrassed, but he's strong in his own ways. He's a loyal friend to the end and only wants a normal life where everyone he loves is truly happy.
Third Person: Yuki stood still in the front lawn of his supposed new "house". He was still enough to be a statue in fact ... or perhaps more like a fountain, as sweat was making its way in steady streams down his face. He wasn't even sure his heart was beating at the moment; the only sound he could hear was rushing water.
In his right hand, he held the phone he'd been given and tried mercilessly and to no avail to find a search function on. In his left he held the letter written by the landlord which had not only given him keys but a new address and information on a family — a family he was the head of. The letter was calling him the man of the house, the father and —
Blip blip — tiny bubbles of air passed through his lips as the water began to fill his lungs and pour in over his head at last. He had stopped breathing a long time ago, but only now was it starting to hurt. What does he do in this situation? Where is he, and where are his friends ...? It's not Enoshima, there was no view of the ocean that he could see before his vision turned to water itself. And Haru was gone anyway, which was a whole 'nother ache in his chest for other reasons.
I'm drowning. This is it, it's really happening this time. I ...! Alone. Family. Father. The words were haunting him and just as he felt he would finally croak beneath all that water and sweat he was accumulating, he broke free. He broke free and yelled, running off his lawn, passed the neighbor who'd been frightened of his demon face, passed the houses that all looked the same, and ran down the street as quickly as his legs would carry him.
He'd stop running when he was completely free of people to embarrass. Or maybe whenever he hit the ocean. That would be nice. Nothing could be better than fishing with his friends again.
