IC INFORMATION
Character's Name: Lovino Vargas/Italy Romano
Age: Roughly 21 in human years.
Canon: Axis Powers Hetalia
Canon Point: Modern day (mid-2013).
Species: Nation.
Gender: Male.
Orientation: Pansexual or demisexual would be the best assumption. It's generally considered that nations have different concepts of sexuality than a human would, and Romano doesn't seem to show much interest in getting together with someone. It'd take a while for him to trust anyone enough, in my opinion, because of all his abandonment issues.

History: Romano's page on the Hetalia wiki

Wikipedia's page on the history of Southern Italy

Appearance:
Romano has dark brown hair, parted to his right, with one large curl sticking out. His skin is an olive complexion that's average for Southern Italians-- not the darkest European skin color, but certainly tanner than his brother's. He's around 5'6” in height; fairly average, though maybe a bit on the short side. His build is fairly slim, and he's lacking on the muscles side of things, except for the lean muscles in his legs from running and playing soccer. The scowl on his face is virtually always present, and he's quick to blush.

Personality: Romano fits pretty snugly into the 'tsundere' archetype-- most of the time, he acts irritable, angry, and hostile, even if he doesn't truly feel that way. He regularly denies how he feels, or lies about things he did, even when it's obvious he's not telling the truth. The only exception to this is when he's with women-- he's friendly and polite with most of them. Romano has both abandonment issues and an inferiority complex, stemming primarily from when his grandfather took his brother and left to travel without him. After becoming Spain's charge, Romano became convinced the only reason that Spain wanted him was for his grandfather's inheritance. That, along with Spain's attempts to trade him for his brother, and the constant praise of Italy and insisting he was cuter than Romano, added to his insecurities. Nowadays, he's quick to be belligerent and push away anyone who might want to get close to him, as an act of self-preservation. He doesn't want to become dependent on anyone and have them leave him.

The relationship between Romano and Veneziano is complicated at best. They were separated for much of their childhood, and the cultural differences between North and South Italy are numerous. They seem to bicker a lot, and neither of them are completely innocent when it comes to provoking each other. However, they are brothers, and two halves of the same country. They rely on each other a lot and are pretty close, judging by all the time they spend together. Family tends to be very important to Italians.

Romano is very insecure, and (unless provoked) will shy away from doing things if he fears he'll fail. When he was a child, he had chorea, a disorder resulting in involuntary muscle spasms. When cleaning, it'd cause him to knock things over, and in general attributed to his clumsiness. As a result, Romano would refuse to clean, instead making Spain do it for him. Nowadays, he's proven he can be a hard worker-- Germany sums it up pretty well with the line “He's a guy who can do what he puts his mind to,” but the same assumption could be made from references to his farming culture.

Just like his brother, Romano is cowardly and easily scared, though unlike his brother often puts on a tough front. He's notably scared of Russia, France, and England when he captures Romano. When he was younger, he thought Prussia was scary, but not enough to keep from mouthing off to him (from a safe distance). He's shown to be bullied around by the mafia, and when he resists them (another example of his determination), they're surprised, and certainly didn't expect it from Romano. He's as quick to run away from a fight as his brother is.

Abilities: For the most part, just immortality. A nation's health and strength is also affected by their economy; it's not exactly an ability, but still something that will disappear when he becomes human.

Other: There's a lot of headcanoning from small bits of canon to round out his character.

SAMPLES
First Person:
Some shenanigans with an anon.
A short thread of these dumbasses.
More dumbasses.
Third Person:
Lovino is largely a creature of habit, so when he wakes up in the morning and rolls out of bed to make coffee, he's hardly awake. What wakes him up quickly enough, though, is the sight of the cord of his electric moka pot chewed apart. “Gino!” he hollers, but of course the damned cat is nowhere to be found.

There's no way he'll make it through the day without some sort of caffeine, so Lovino growls angrily and snatches up his car keys as he stomps outside. It's a five minute drive (at least, when Lovino drives) to the nearest coffee shop that looks somewhat tolerable, and even that short distance is eating away at his nerves.

By the time he actually arrives at the cafe, he's in a full-blown pissy mood, storming through the doors and stomping up to the register. The scowl on his face is a pretty clear broadcast of how exactly he's feeling. Taking barely a moment to peruse the menu, he directs his attention to the person behind the counter.

“Give me a cappuccino chiaro with two shots of espresso.” He didn't check if they actually had it for sale, but any self-respecting cafe would.
