History: Here.
Appearance: Don't you feel happy? Surprised? Moved?
Personality:
Yozora appears to embody what her name, translated as "night sky", suggests - elegance, beauty, but also mystery, the unknown. True enough, the girl is often seen with a sullen expression, as if there is always something she is annoyed with, coming off as very aloof to her classmates. She has above average grades and good looks, but take into account her personality and it's easy to see why she doesn't stand out. Rather, she doesn't make an effort to. Outside of class, she talks to no one, so no one talks to her - no one knows anything about her. Her extracurricular activities consist of attending the Go-Home Club, which is to say, she has none at all. It should be obvious by now: Yozora Mikazuki has no friends. She does not know how to make friends. Never in her entire life has she made a friend. Because of her personality, she is a hopeless case who has already given up a long time ago.

That's not true, though. She did make one friend - Kodaka. They were close friends in her elementary years, and possibly the only friend she ever had back then. After he moved away and failed to tell her beforehand, she felt betrayed by his sudden disappearance and later, his inability to remember her. The event affected her greatly since she does not successfully make any friends years later, although this result could be more attributed to her inability to make friends in the first place. It is unclear which caused the other, but one thing is certain: Yozora values friendship very much. She goes so far as to make an imaginary friend whom she affectionately calls Tomo-chan, derived from the Japanese word for friend. When she talks to Tomo-chan, her personality flips and she is as bright and cheerful as she is normally dull and gloomy. Notably, Tomo-chan is "cute, smart, athletic, friendly, sociable, good at listening, and... she would never betray [Yozora]" showing that she does treasure friendship even if her pragmatic and cycnical attitude towards making friends per se suggests otherwise. She quotes her mother, "It doesn't matter if you can't make one hundred friends - you just need to make real friends who are as important to you as one hundred people. Even if it's just one person, as long as you and that friend value each other more than anything, your life will definitely shine."

Still, it's hard to see that Yozora holds such beliefs. Unable to speak to people unless they are in the same situation as she (i.e. being in a prolonged state of friendlessness), Yozora is aloof, but when she does loosen up, she looks cute when she smiles, but is arrogant, blunt, cruel and sadistic. It is as if she has no morals, a conscience or respect for others at all - she has no problems with manipulating naïve children, calling religions fickle and verbally abusing Sena in a comedic manner to no end. However! She will only do this if she is provoked. If she has no reason to be mean, she won't bother you. In the event that she does have reasons, she tends to get carried away with her actions. No one seems to be safe from her but Rika, whose impossible character is beyond weird and beyond Yozora's control.

Yozora is a trickster, preferring to set traps for her prey and wait for the right chance to strike. This part of her personality is shown more concretely whenever she plays video games. The naivety of people is also something she enjoys exploiting to no end. She fools Maria into giving her a room for her club and Yukimura into crossdressing by bullshitting her way around everything. She knows how to damage one's ego, even resorting to kindness as a form of cruelty at times. Provoking Sena has become one of her hobbies as well. Their personalities constantly clash and there is never a time they are seen getting along. Between the two, Yozora is armed with a sharper tongue, so it is not surprising that due to Sena's incompetence and quick temper, Yozora often has the upper hand in their fights.

Speaking of Sena, Yozora detests her from the very beginning, telling her that "The real life can go die!" before she discovers that she doesn't have any friends, either. Yozora dislikes "normals", those who live a more fulfilling and enjoyable life with their friends. Unlike normals, she spends her time doing activities meant to be done with friends alone, such as going to karaoke bars. Since she has a lot of free time, she has gone to every karaoke bar in the area. Mostof the time, however, she is found alone studying or reading a book. Kodaka surmises that school must be a boring place with people with no friends and this is true in her case. Yozora herself states that she is good at doing boring things like paperwork - things she can leave behind once she is done with them - perhaps because she usually has nothing else to do.

So what does she do when she isn't reading or being alone? Ha! Her, a bully? Yozora claims to understand the motives behind bullying, but although she behaves like a bully herself, she doesn't accept the act and refuses to be associated with those who do it. When Kodaka calls her a bully herself, she snaps back, "Don't lump me in with those guys." In fact, it was her who attempted to save Kodaka from bullies ten years ago, telling the children, "Don't bully the weak."

Her manner of speech is completely opposite of her appearance, so she gives off the impression of a tough individual. The language she uses is casual, but rough, nowhere near anything one would expect. Even so, she has a feminine, if eccentric side to her. Her tastes in costumes are rather strange, from maid uniforms to anthropomorphic roses, and her sense of cuteness is the same. She seems to like doujinshi and dating sims as well, although she would never admit it. She often denies her fondness of any of these things and gets embarrassed whenever people bring the topic up; she changes the subject to avoid this altogether. This is her same approach to topics when they get too scandalous for her. One will be surprised by how flustered she gets at the mention of sex and romance. In the series, she is scandalized by Sena's R-rated dating sims and Rika's openness in discussing doujinshi for mature audiences. Often, she would react in a way that involves a lot of blushing and angry screaming. Although she may look fierce, she herself knows shame and fear.

Especially fear. Yozora has many anxieties that prevent her from being a "normal" as she'd call it: she hates crowds, being humiliated in front of them, and talking to people in general. Her anxieties are bad enough for her to require a large amount of courage in order to go out of her comfort zone. Once in a while, she'd bring up stories of her trauma to make a point as well. In addition, she gets embarrassed easily and would rather not be the center of attention if she can help it. She implies that she dislikes wearing flashy clothes during the summer festival and loudly denies being cute after Rika and Kodaka call her that. Expressing her true emotions can be embarrassing for her as well, so she often does this by hitting people with a flyswatter. Why? Well, sometimes it's the only way she can get Kodaka to stop ogling Sena.

It might be due to her lonely nature, but it is easy for Yozora to get attached to people. A minor example is her reluctance to give the video game character she was assigned to voice to Rika in the drama CD, but more prominent in the series is her attachment to Kodaka. They may have spent a short time together, but it is evident that she considered Kodaka a close friend and did not forget him after ten years as easily as he did. Her subtle pained smiles and reactions to Kodaka show that she is hurt, but she never tells him about their past and keeps him around anyway. When he finally remembers, however, she cries.

In summary, Yozora is a strange, anti-social sadist who has issues with people but considers friendship important in spite of herself.
