Re: The Kid | Bastion | Reserved (2/?)

Personality: The Kid can quite bluntly be summarized as something of a workhorse that doesn't know very many tricks. Having grown up on his own for most of his life, he's not very good at socializing or even speaking to others, and prefers to spend his time doing something physical whether it's building, breaking, or fighting. He's not terribly bright either, having not done well in school for most of his youth to the point where dropping out and entering one of Caelondia's most dangerous careers worked out better for him. While not very book smart, however, he is a quick-thinker and has a good knowledge of crafting and masonry. His work-a-day lifestyle, plus the trauma of scouting beyond the Rippling Walls and losing his mother, has made him very quiet and tends to be gruff, blunt, and with brutal honesty when he speaks to others.

Of course, this doesn't really mean he's without charm of some kind, or at least redeeming qualities. While he's not much of a speaker and has a dry sense of humor, The Kid is very dedicated to any task at hand or work he is given. If something needs to be done, then come hell or high water, The Kid will see that it's done...even at cost of physical harm to himself in gratitious qualities, often nearly killing him. And despite his stony demeanor, the Kid is also very compassionate, understanding the plights of his fellow survivors and even risking his life to save Zulf, who had betrayed the Bastion he had been working hard to repair not long ago. Though this is the most overt example, while the Kid prefers to focus his dedication to a workload, he will gladly demonstrate as much if not more effort and will to save someone he considers a friend.

However, this workaholic mindset and lack of self-preservation does cut both ways. The Kid suffers from a long-standing survivor's guilt that started with his mother's death and ended with The Calamity. While he doesn't show much angst or despair out in the open, The Kid's lack of self-care and constantly pushing his body to its physical limit hints at suicidal tendencies, and his dedication to aiding a friend being an expression of trying to atone for not being able to save his ill mother in time. Even if he's not doing anything particularly stressful or difficult, The Kid is often drowning himself in alcohol in some form or another. He also keeps most of this behavior to himself, refusing to talk about his past in the open or anything involving a dark look into his psyche caused by hallucinations in Jawson's Bog.

Overall, the Kid is a workhorse. A strong, dedicated workhorse that's taken a lot more burden than it's meant to for most of its life and nearly broke under the weight more than once. But on he marches, to build and break some more.
Abilites: (Fast Learner) - The Kid is able to develop fancy fighting moves and using previously-unknown just from following training manuals for a short time. While he doesn't fight any organized opponents until the surviving Ura encounter him, he'd able to adapt in most hostile environments and make useful tools from make-do.

Mason - The Kid spent nearly ten long years as a Mason taking two full shifts on the Rippling Walls, which can be described as a hellish combination of the Great Wall of China and border patrol duty for Jurassic Park. He is able to work with most rudimentary materials to make functioning weapons out of both stone, steel, and gunpowder with the right materials and prep time. He has also spent most of his youth-onwards as a combatant, having been trusted to patrol far beyond the Wall than anyone else. Whether it's old-time firearms or his trusty hammer, the Kid is able to use it and use it well. Anything post-Industiral in terms of weaponry is likely to just confuse him, magic even moreso, though he's likely to pick up on how to use (but not build) the former if given time.

Grit - Overall, aside from being fairly strong, there's no supernatural ability that really separates the Kid from any Caelondian. However, his determination and constant risk-taking is often an asset on his own, acting in tandem with both of his above skills to fight through most of the Wilds and even the much-more-experienced Ura survivors en masse all on his lonesome. His absolute refusal to put aside a task he's given often leads to him taking risks many would consider deadly, and often coming out on top anyways. This can obviously backfire if he's in over his head or taking unnecessary risks...

Liver of Steel - The Kid drinks. A lot. Despite this, he's given only gameplay boosts as he consumes more and more of the spirits available in the Bastion, and is likely how he's able to take such a beating on most of his trips. He has an alcohol tolerance most wouldn't dream of, and you couldn't tell he was drunk (besides the smell) from how he behaves most of the time. It also dulls his ability to feel pain as a slight bonus, which helps his Grit...though it's likely done the same for his sense of touch and makes him easily overlook anything from a soft poke to a bug crawling on him.
