IC INFORMATION Characters Name: Shizuo Heiwajima Age: 24 Canon: Durarara!! Canon Point: Episode 25 Species: Human Gender: Male Orientation: Shizuo is a simple person with simple tastes; I doubt he'd hesitate due to gender, so I will be pegging him as bisexual.
Shizuo is more often than not described as an exceptionally violent person who can't keep a lid on his own anger. He is frequently seen in the series instigating or getting wrapped up in fights, unhesitant when dealing with his long-time rival Izaya Orihara or members of gangs that irritate him. He almost seems to enjoy uprooting street signs and vending machines to throw at his victims -- unsuspecting or not -- or punching someone so hard they fly out of their clothes, even though he frequently claims he "hates violence" as seen in episode seven.
Shizuo's power is uncontrollable to an extent, making his violent tendencies an unwanted curse in his own eyes, making him view himself as some sort of beast; he never wants to hurt anyone who doesn't deserve it, of course, but on occasion this is seen happening even at the slightest provocation. He can be tipped over the edge by even something as trivial as someone telling a story too long or too annoying, making it obvious his temper is extremely short. These outbursts of rage are first noticeable when he is described as the "person you don't want as an enemy" in episode one of the animated series and to "not hesitate to run from him" in the manga and later in episode three - his debut - when he throws a trashcan at Izaya. His name is infamous in the city of Ikebukuro. Being known as the "strongest man" in his town, it has quite the averse affect on how people picture him. He doesn't deny the accusations, nor does this make the accusations false. He is very much the brute, the animal and the monster people believe and state he is. After all, he is strongly motivated by the idea of "killing Izaya" - due to Izaya falsely accusing him for an unspecified crime he did not commit, consequently getting him arrested - or anyone else that bothers him.
Though it would be uncharacteristic for him to go as far as killing someone, since he is not entirely as awful as he initially comes across as. Really, Shizuo is a no-nonsense character who hates lies - the debtors he and Tom visit to collect payments believe they are very adept at lying - and anything else that could readily be described as “bullshit” - like his friend Shinra's attempts to study his abilities in the name of science which he tends to reply to with physical threats to break the good doctor's arm, like when he was a child, a flashback in episode seven. When he isn't irritated or in a fit of rage, Shizuo is a very quiet, nondescript person who enjoys the simple things in life. In fact, he himself is quite simple, choosing to rent an apartment by his lonesome, choosing only to keep in contact with a couple of close friends and his little brother Kasuka and choosing plainer, more inelegant desires such as basking in the sun when he has free time, smoking - one of his only bad habits - and watching martial arts on television. It is also seen in the anime that Shizuo has rather childish tastes in terms of food and language.
He loves anything sweet like suckers and pudding as shown in episode seven, enjoys dairy products greatly - which is actually a point of interest since it seems to calm him down, demonstrated when Kasuka stops a rage-tantrum with a bottle of milk after he gets ticked off - and chooses easy words to understand. In fact, Shizuo has a limited vocabulary and swears like a sailor at times, seen in most episodes. While Shizuo may have an innocent side not many are privy to -- since no one seems to like to get close to him, much to his relief as he worries constantly about injuring those he cares about - he also has a very vulnerable centre full of insecurity. He has grown too weary of his own abilities and has basically burnt himself out on his own anger. Shizuo is frightened of his own power, because he has been known to hurt those he loves before, also seen in episode seven. When he was younger he hurt a woman - a shopkeeper who used to give him and his brother treats - because of his unharnessed anger and has since kept to himself or pushed others away because of this fact.
But overall, this doubt in himself is put on the back burner when it comes to his little brother and those precious to him. He is extremely protective and can easily develop complexes regarding certain people - like Celty, his good friend the Dullahan, who he can act very defensive about, shown in an episode explaining that he'd kill anyone who messed with her. Shizuo is a good guy once you get to know him. He is very loyal to his friends - like Tom, who he heroically saved from bullies when they were young - and family, even though he feels slightly overshadowed by his famous brother. This does not give him any ill feelings towards Kasuka; quite the opposite, in fact, since Shizuo has been seen telling others not to insult Kasuka by comparing them.
In a nutshell, he has easy tastes and a straightforward, albeit blunt, attitude, despite his tendency to lose himself to his own ire when situations present themselves.
Abilites:
Shizuo has the power of unbelievable strength. It is stated - described by his friend and personal doctor, Shinra - that while the brain usually suspends the use of such power by shutting down muscle in response to pain to avoid injuring the body, Shizuo doesn't have this mental block and has been able to use his abnormal strength since he was a young boy. It is “naturally unlimited” and it is described as the “adrenaline power” people use when they're threatened or in danger. His muscles and bones have since strengthened due to constant injury when he first developed the power since it caused too much strain for him and now he does not sustain injuries, even when lifting telephone poles and even a massive truck that had ran him over, as seen in episode twenty-five.
His fighting ability is rough and ungraceful, sloppy and kind of berserk when he's in a one on one with another - as demonstrated in his battle against mindless victims of a curse where he can be seen using little to no tact in dealing with his opponents. Shizuo is a traceur, however - though obviously not by trade - and is extremely adept at parkour - the art of efficient movement around obstacles.
