History:The Nation | The Character Appearance: Southern Italy appears as a young man with dark brown hair, slightly taller than average height (that is to say, taller than his younger brother, but shorter than Germany), and a solid yet lean build. His hair parts to the right, and one particularly stubborn curl hangs to the left side of his head. Most of the time, he'll either be frowning or looking disinterested in general. Prefers reds and dark browns in his clothing. Picture for you! Personality: Romano is graced with all the personality of a PMSing woman.
On even a good day, he appears to be sulking or generally upset about something, when on the inside he may really be neither. A frown is his default expression.
Throughout the majority of canon, the only instances he's actually smiled were times he was plotting revenge on Germany, always to no avail. There are times when he can say the cruelest things, other times he’s just too embarrassed to be honest, so a harsh comeback is the easiest way for him to reply and feel in control of the situation.
He has a foul mouth to accompany his sour attitude. His favorite words are “Bastard”, “Dick”, and “Asshole”. Even as a little nation, he constantly cursed and berated his caretakers, including Spain, whose nickname ranged from ‘Bastard’ to ‘Jerk’ depending on Romano’s mood. Belgium was an exception to his vulgarity, and likely the reason he tends to prefer the company of women later in his life. She was one of the few women he had contact with and he clearly preferred her to the stupid idiot men. Spain later grew on him as well, but more because he was protective of Romano and he did genuinely care about him enough to rescue him from bad people (Turkey, France). He first thought Spain was only protective because of who Romano was-- the descendent of the Roman Empire, an asset to collect. Actually, this was probably the accurate reasoning behind Spain's initial concerns, but Romano came to care less about that stuff as long as he kept keeping him safe and doting on him. It's also worthwhile to note that when he was younger, Romano had the disease called Choreia, which was a major cause for his clumsiness. Spain apparently cured him of this ailment by playing a tune on his guitar that made little Romano dance a tarantella. Unfortunately, a lot of the clumsiness remained.
His bad behavior is only encouraged further with influence from the mafia, even if he and they were never on good terms because of the harm they've done to his economy (which pretty much relates directly to his health). He views the world as a dark place because of the way his people live, constantly struggling against crime and poverty, and especially from pressure from the North. These things are very close to his heart. His view on the world is very biased: everyone is out to get him, so he has to keep on his emotional and physical defense.
He’s a bit spoiled and usually expects to get his way if he whines enough, though this doesn’t happen as often as he’d like. He avoids hard labor like the plague and would prefer to be tending to plants or cooking or eating or sleeping. His siesta is serious business and he almost always sleeps naked and alone, with a few female exceptions.
Headcanon alert: He is still a bit sensitive when hearing his brother referred to as simply 'Italy', as if the speaker refuses to acknowledge that Romano is very much a part of Italy as well. For this reason, he makes a point to call North Italy 'Veneziano'. To be fair, they are both Italy, two parts of a whole. He'd really like for his brother to correct people when they name him incorrectly, but unfortunately, it doesn't happen.
As per the Italian stereotype presented in the webcomics and anime, he is a coward: he may start fights, but most of the time he will run away from them or trip on his way in; a flirt: normally, he only flirts with pretty women and acts abrasive to men; and a lover of good food and wine: self-explanatory.
He’s deathly afraid of many things, despite his admirable attempts to seem brave. If he's pushed hard enough, or someone he cares for is in trouble, he may be able to look past his fears and do what needs to be done.
Romano also thinks perverts like France need to go eat bullets and die.
Abilites: He's connected to the Southern half of Italy to the point that changes in its economy reflect in his wellness or lack thereof. Romano has a deep connection with the dark underbelly of Italy, moreso than his brother, and also has more experience with thugs and the like. Beat-downs, interogations, wielding huge guns for absolutely no reason at all other than intimidation, theft, you name the crime, he probably knows all about it; how to perform it and how to intervene and live. Of course, before, being a Nation came with something akin to immortality and his life hasn't been something to really worry about... mostly. He can also cook an awesome pasta and/or pizza.
