Personality: A lot of Kanata's personality revolves around the fact that he was born with an illness that might one day kill him, passed down to him by a father that died when he was extremely young. In order to try and keep other's worries at bay, he acts tougher and plays down his sickness as if it isn't all that big a deal and rarely mentions it, though his efforts normally only make people worry about him even more. When he was a child, his body was extremely fragile and weak, his illness and its symptoms keeping him from doing a lot of the same things as the other children. Feeling alone and petrified of dying, losing what little he had and troubling his two best friends (Tsukiko, the game's heroine, and Suzuya), he often burst in tears and became near inconsolable. Thankfully, as he grew older he grew a tad bit stronger. His constitution stayed about the same until his teenage years, though he grew at a normal rate.
As he grew older, his complex over his sickness grew from a profound sadness to a need to protect those who had stayed with him, taking care of him, who had loved him when he needed them the most. As much as he wanted to become stronger, his body wasn't built for much physical combat, which meant that most of his fights ended with him on the ground, the obvious loser. After a while, he eventually learned how to spar decently well, then became something of a force to be reckoned with, though his weak physicality keeps him from keeping a fight going longer than three minutes. Kanata also found a way to feel more alive, though his body ironically began to deteriorate with his new found passion. After a while, around his school, he garnered the reputation of a delinquent. Suzuya and Tsukiko constantly had to get onto him for fighting, which he enjoyed in a way. It showed that his friends truly did care for him, making him feel like a person deserving of their love and having the ability to live freely with no bounds.
A certified slacker, Kanata is more likely to be seen lying around campus than in class. His awful attendance requires him to attend make up classes, though he isn't necessarily stupid, just not the most book smart individual. When he IS in class, he's normally dozing off or not paying attention. When at home, he's either goofing off or lazing around, leaving a lot of his chores to Suzuya to come and do them for you, as well as meals. Without Suzuya, Kanata probably would have died in his own filth or from hunger. He likes to believe he can take care of his friends, but the most basic of living skills are pretty much a mystery to him. He is there for them, though, and does hold them above himself, no matter what he says. He's actually quite shy about his love for his friends, and the only people he can openly dislike are those that bother them or cause them any distress.
Interpersonal relationships aren't a strong suit of his. When new people are introduced into his environment, he doesn’t quite know how to react other than defensively. Anyone that interferes in his little family triangle is going to send up immediate red flags and it’s rare for him to take an instant liking to someone. He’s like a cat: very cautious in his approach and he either immediately hates you forever or dislikes you and slowly warms up to you. Where Tsukiko is concerned, his feelings are…”hidden”. It’s quite obvious he loves her, to everyone but her, but he’s too dense to realize how obvious it is. Kanata is, despite his illness and complex, a cheerful person. He loves to tease those whom he cares about and is generally in a happy mood. He knows how precious life is and it's something he can't afford to waste. Why go through life miserable when you don't know if you'll be here the next day? He doesn't fully stick to the whole "live life to the fullest" ploy; being extremely closed concerning his own feelings. When called out on any of his feelings, he has a brash panic attack and freaks out. The only one allowed to talk about things like that is him, and even then, it takes a while for him to open up.
