Masato Hijirikawa ★ Uta no Prince-sama [2]

History: wikia - history

Appearance: This loser right here. 5'11, so pale he probably blinds people in the summer, beauty mark under his left eye, slightly-uneven hime cut, looks miserable 80% of the time. His features are so soft that he'd make a pretty fabulous female if he were to crossdress (canon proven!).

Personality:
Masato Hijirikawa is a very proper child. He follows rules, listens to his elders, and does his best not to step on toes. But that's because he was raised to be such a stickler. The eldest of the Hijirikawa family, Masato knows that he is nothing but an heir to the family and the one made to take over the Hijirikawa Group, his father's company. His father had him raised in a very strict and serious environment, and he grew up knowing to keep his inner feelings and emotions contained. Because of this, he's been a very reserved and quiet individual, on top of being more serious than necessary.

The only times he's stepped out of this have been when he sings. Music, to him, has been a lifeline and a way to express himself. He has a soft but pleasant voice, and he plays piano nearly professionally. Masato wants to be a musician, but seeing as he is set to become the lead of the Hijirikawa Group, this dream is a hard one to realize. His father is against the idea of music or singing, thinking of it as nothing but a waste of time for someone who won't be going into that field anyway, but Hijirikawa still wishes to continue this. He had made a deal with his father, upon his grandfather's offer to pay a school's tuition, to attend Saotome Academy (a school for gifted musicians and composers who wish to step into the professional world), but he only has one year to prove himself. However, it's shown that Masato can withstand the pressure. With his professional and serious attitude, he's done nothing but push himself to excel during that one year attending the school.

But outside of that pressure, Masato just loves to sing. He likes the warmth he feels being able to let his music reach another, and he likes the fact that it's the one thing he can do to properly express his feelings. When he's singing and playing the piano, he doesn't need to keep up that serious demeanor. He doesn't need to fear his father or even think of being the heir to the family empire when he's busy proclaiming his love to the rhythm of a song. Writing lyrics excites him, and he actually enjoys himself when he can just have a carefree day of singing and playing.

Because music is so important to him, Masato does his best to take care of himself in his fields of excellence. Since he plays the piano, he does his best to make sure his hands stay in top condition. That means no rough sports and no fighting (or very minimal, as he has taken a swing or two at some roommates). He fears injuring his fingers and not being able to play the piano, so he does his best to keep his hands out of harm's way. He certainly doesn't lack the skills--Masato, strangely enough, is quite good at throwing a punch--but he has enough self-restraint. Most of the time, at least; there are a few times when he can't help it, but he would rather surrender in a fight than to injure them. Sure, it's a little excessive at times, but he's very cautious of his voice and his hands to keep them in good shape. The only time he'll risk his hands is if he's trying to help someone.

That's one thing about Masato that he'll never be able to shake. He's a very helpful person. When Haruka couldn't play the piano, he gave her lessons. When Ren was getting too close, Masato stepped in to tell him to keep his distance. He doesn't like seeing people get hurt, especially when it's something that can be prevented. If there's something he is able to do, Masato will step in to offer assistance. However, his help only comes when it's wanted - he won't hesitate to share a sharp word and turn away to someone who doesn't want to help themselves. That is probably his top problem with Ren Jinguji, his roommate and ex-best friend; he doesn't hate the fact that Ren is the third child of his family and can do as he pleases, but the fact that Ren doesn't seem to care enough about his own life to take charge of it himself, and the fact that he doesn't seem to take things seriously in the least. That sort of reckless and careless behavior aggravates him to no end. He's also very good at being helpful and thinking through problems. Besides just being a helpful person, he's quite reasonable and good at coming up with solutions out of problems. However, being a teenager, this isn't always functioning - but he thinks through more things than his friends.

Masato does not let his emotions get in the way. Very serious and calm, he takes a more objective look at situations since he doesn't wish to upset anyone purposefully. It also makes him the level-headed individual in a heated situation. Because it's normally easier to think with a clear head, Masato's the one you can go to if you're in a panic.

His family is definitely his greatest weakness. His duty to his father and being the heir of the Hijirikawa Group often takes place of his dreams, and his goal to keep his little sister safe and have her enjoy a life he doesn't normally get to control urges him to continue this. He is betrothed to a woman his family has set up for him, and he doesn't wish to marry her but he will if he has to. Life has been planned for him since birth, and the only thing he could break away from when it came to fitting in that role was singing. His other weakness, which still follows him to this day: is his frail physique. He has a very frail bones and a delicate nature about him. His skin doesn't tan, and he's more prone to broken bones due to a lack of calcium because he detests milk. Most recently, he's been trying to drink more, but it is a struggle.
