History:a brief study of junpei hyuuga Appearance: Despite most of the characters in this series - Hyuuga's appearance is quite normal. He has a normal hair color (as long as we ignore a stint in his first year of high school due to an attempt at recreating himself in his new school) and a normal hair style (short and spiky black hair). He wears glasses, even in game, and is a fairly average size - 5'10" and 150 pounds of muscle and sheer, short-tempered fury. His eyes are also dark, and after realizing that his failed attempt at recreating himself, he has found himself to be quite comfortable in his average appearance.
Personality:
Hyuuga Junpei (or Junpei Hyuuga, in western order) is a captain.
Which, considering how he had to originally be pressured into the role, is pretty ironic. Before entering high school, Hyuuga has decided to quit basketball. He had felt cheated out of the sport when he practiced, and practiced, and practiced, and never seemed to get anywhere. His team was decent, but not good, and without any special talents or abilities, they never seemed to rise above the rest. He didn't see the point in playing if he didn't see any kind of reward. Putting your heart and soul into a sport without even making it past the first round of a tournament is disheartening for anyone, and Hyuuga decided that when he joined high school, he was going to reinvent himself. This involved quitting basketball, his main hobby and extracurricular activity, and dying his hair blonde - away from his short cropped black hair.
He wanted to reinvent himself, to find a new Hyuuga in high school that didn't have to suffer the pain of disappointment and defeat. His issue was that he put so much of his time into the sport, and while he was the best shooter on the team, and a very talented player, he wasn't enough to lead them to victory. Hyuuga is the type to carry most, if not all, responsibility on his shoulders. In middle school, his team did not have many talented players, so he put both the ace responsibilities and captain responsibilities on his shoulders. When he couldn't perform, the pain he inflicted on himself was so great, he figured the only choice he had left was to quit basketball and do something else.
The only problem? He loved basketball, and with the right amount of pushing (Hyuuga is the type of person who needs to be pushed, who doesn't want to seem eager or easily swayed, even when he may want something in the first place) he was convinced by his old teammate and best friend (Izuki) and an uncrowned king (Teppei) to start up, and join. How he become captain was more everyone else's choice rather than his - but as responsibility and determination come easy to him, so did the captain position.
Most first impressions of Hyuuga are just that - he is responsible, he is studious, he is fairly calm and collected and normal. It was half the reason his 'reinvention' didn't work - at his heart, Hyuuga is not that person to be outwardly loud and attention-seeking. He loves Japanese history and samurai, but really, that's about as weird as his hobbies tend to get. The Hyuuga on the basketball court isn't too different - he is dependable, he is responsible, and he is sure to keep everyone's heads in the right place. He is a leader, through and through, and he is not afraid to wear that role on the court as well. He works well under pressure, and this is most defined by his on-court tendency to work best under pressure - or, in the clutch. Clutch-time Hyuuga is a little different, only in that he is overly confident, to a point of cockiness, and is generally aloof and easy when it comes to playing. He has a tendency, when he is in this clutch-state, to crack his neck, and this is the state when he is at the height of his basketball talents, and while he's not on the level of Midorima (who is almost physically unable to miss a shot), his percentage of shooting is very high, and very dependable.
Other than that, when Hyuuga is around his friends he is a little more laid back - not quick to anger, but not unafraid of it, yelling or hitting friends when they're being stupid, or arguing with Teppei for literally any reason at all. He is easily flustered, too, when it comes to girls or anything in that sphere of romance. He is a boy, a teenage boy, and while he is very mature and responsible and dedicated to his team, he is just doing the best he can. He has a lot of pride for himself, and for his team, and if he thinks anyone is looking down on either of those, he isn't afraid of speaking his mind on the matter.
Abilities: The most defining trait of the Kuroko no Basuke series is the grey area between artistic licence and realistic basketball ability. The series itself is made up of teenage boys (between 14-16 years old) who are able to stop time, make baskets from the other side of the court, are unable to miss baskets, and who shoot lasers out of their hands to pass balls. Hyuuga is, thankfully, one of the more realistic players on the team - his abilities falling more in the 'does very well under pressure' and 'is a fantastic outside shooter'. He helped bring his team to the finals during his first high school tournament, and as the captain, helped lead his team to the championship.
He is merely human, though. He has no super speed or super agility - everything he is able to do has come to him from intense training and personal dedication. He has honed his skills because he has a personal dedication to himself and the help of his teammates. He does have what some could consider an above average willpower, but he would hardly call that an 'ability'. Other: n/a
