History: Hato's history is a...complicated one. Born a male, Hato never considered anything strange about himself growing up aside from a love of drawing and manga. In high school, he joined the art club, which was the closest thing his school had to an anime or manga club. There, he spent most of time around a bunch of fujoshi, one of which he developed a bit of a crush on. Through spending time with them, he discovered that he actually quite liked boy's love manga, more than regular manga, which would make him a fundashi (a boy who liked boy's love). This was humiliating to him, so he kept his interests hidden.

His senpai, the girl he had a crush on, eventually went on to date and marry his older brother. Hato took this a bit hard, but went on to college none-the-less and decided to join the Genshiken club. However, he was tired of hiding his love for BL manga, so he came up with the plan to dress as a girl when he attended club meetings. He practiced and trained his voice and learned about make-up, and became quite convincing. His secret was revealed at the very first meeting, but aside from a few befuddled members, he was largely accepted as a female.

However, it wasn't smooth sailing from there. A couple of the members harassed him for dressing as a girl, and made him feel pressured to switch back to dressing as a boy. On a few occasions, he shed his female persona to perform acts for the club, like collect doujin for the other male club members or walk home alone without being harassed. But he started developing feelings for one of the male graduates of the club, and it sent him into a dark spiral where he wasn't sure what to do with himself anymore. He knew he wasn't gay, but then why did he feel so attracted to men?

A lot of soul searching took place, where Hato discovered that he drew better when dressed as a girl, and that he felt more comfortable as a girl in general. It led to the conclusion that he was happier as a female, that he was a female, and that there was nothing strange about being attracted to men at all; he was a heterosexual, just in a different position than he'd originally thought he would be.

As a result, Hato began to adapt female pronouns, and she began courting the male member of her club as best she knew how. It's obvious that she's more comfortable in her skin now that she's come to terms with her gender and sexuality issues, and while it was a long road, she's happy to finally be here she is.
Appearance: Hato's appearance changes frequently, due to the number of wigs in her collection. She favors this long red-brown wig, and it can be considered her default appearance. When she's not wearing her make-up and other trappings, she looks more masculine (since she has yet to transition) like so, although the only people who might possibly see her like this are her "family" and any significant other she might wrangle.
Personality: Hato is a very shy, reserved girl who flusters easily and almost always has a blush on her cheeks. She's the kind of girl who would prefer to sit at the back of a room and draw rather than be the center of attention, and if too many people focus on her at once, she has a bad habit of stuttering badly or drawing in on herself and not talking. This social anxiety makes it hard for her to reach out and befriend others, but she doesn't let it stop her from trying as hard as she can to make friends and support the people she cares about.

She's fiercely loyal, almost to a fault, and has trouble accepting criticisms of her friends no matter how valid they may be (like a problematic thing someone said or someone doing something wrong). It makes her a bit of an apologist, and she usually has to be confronted with evidence or by a group of other friends before she'll actually turn on someone. She's also very anti-confrontational, although she has a bit more of a backbone when it comes to defending her friends.

Communicating isn't her strong suit, and she speaks without thinking pretty frequently, which makes her backpedal like crazy and get flustered. Her brain to mouth filter is essentially broken, but it always starts working soon enough to kick her right in the ass after she says something stupid or weird without realizing it.

Hato has a bit of a competitive steak in her, despite her quiet nature. While she doesn't usually demonstrate it outwardly, she's almost always measuring herself against others, both out of a desire to exceed them and a fear of not being good enough. This manifests in two different ways. Her art, for example, is something she's highly competitive in, and she gets a little testy if her work is being too obviously compared to something else, and she desperately wants to be successful. On the other hand, she's not confident in her appearance at all, and doesn't feel as pretty or composed as other girls, so she just tries not to draw much attention to herself.

And as far as her gender goes, she's more or less come to terms with her identity as a trans female. She hasn't really decided if she wants to have surgery or not, because part of her is scared she'll change her mind or come to regret it, and her sexuality is still something she's not totally warmed up to. While she knows she likes boys, she's kind of fucking terrified at approaching anyone, lest they figure out what's going on with her and have them become disgusted with her.

This is a fear she also has regarding friends, but she doesn't stand to lose as much there as opposed to potentially losing someone she's in a relationship with.

Abilities: Hato is a talented manga artist, and a decent cook. She isn't sure if these count as abilities, exactly, but wants to make mention of them here.
Other: Hato Kenjirou, at her canon point in the manga, identifies as a female and wishes the lessor to treat her as such. She will be going by the female name "Kumiko" (which has no basis in canon, since she has an established group of friends who only call her "Hato" and has no reason to change her name. But in Holly Heights, she will be taking advantage of this fresh start and acting completely as a female).

Coming in to work early was surprisingly soothing. There was just something...calming, about waking up before the sun, walking in the chill of the morning and unlocking the store to dark rooms and the absence of the hum of electricity. For this reason, she always turns on as few lights as possible, tying her hair in a loose ponytail and tying her apron neatly behind her back. Boxes sit on the counter from the closing crew last night, and she remembers that they were working on a new display at the front of the shop for a new series by a popular manga-ka.

The tape makes a satisfying noise as she tears it from the cardboard, because while the display has been set up, the product still needs to be set out. Hefting an armful of manga, she walks to the front, carefully placing each book in it's spot, making sure not a page is creased or a cover wrinkled. By the time she's unpacked two boxes, there's movement outside the front window, someone approaching the door; probably the other opener for the day.

"Good morning!" she calls out in greeting, giving them a sunny smile from her crouched position in front of the display.
